MODERNAIRES/PAUL KELLY
"Mods Salute Herb Alpert And Tijuana Brass"
The Modernaires here are Tommy Traynor, John Wade, Hal Dickinson & wife Paula Kelly, and Autie Goodman. Band credits: Frank Capp (drums), Bud Shank (baritone sax), Tommy Tedesco (guitar), Terry Trotter (piano), Bill Perkins (tenor sax), Tony Teran (trumpet). Autie Goodman does alto sax on "Alley Cat" and "My Buddy." I hear a calliope --yes, a calliope-- on "Alley Cat." No idea who that is. The band is top-of-the-line jazz small combo tight (drummer is a bit too busy mixing it up), and so is the really, really SMILEY over-the-top Modernaires' vocals. Wow. And I think the songs, the lyrics, were written on the fly to force-fit the comically brassy Tijuana Brass happy kitschy sound. Wow.
And there's a Beatles song: "All My Lovin'". Yes, that kind of jaw-dropping "Wow." I think this thing only survived the initial pressing run, and in 1966 that meant mono Lp copies for AM radio. Mint stereo on this title might be seriously tough to find.
And that chick on the front cover. Dangerous, dangerous eyes. Wow. - Submitted by: Dr. Eustaquio Kirby
