"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"
Misheard Lyrics: Baseball friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more. Original Lyrics: Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more. |
Story about this misheard lyric by: Mary Ann Brite I was shopping in a store when this came on the sound system, not all too loudly for me, as I wasn't particularly close to a speaker at the time. These words seemed to resonate in my head as if they sounded just like "Baseball friends...", etc., even though I already knew the real lyrics! |

"Meet Me In St. Louis"
The Funny Lyrics: We will dance the hoochie coochie
I will be your tootsie wootsie. Why They're Funny: I for one have actually visited St. Louis, and I can assure everyone that the folks don't talk like that there.

"San Francisco"
The Inappropriate Lyrics: But the only bridge
That's a real darn bridge Is the bridge across the bay Why They're Inappropriate: Judy is no doubt referring to the Golden Gate Bridge... except that bridge actually crosses the Golden Gate Strait (hence its name). There is a bridge that does cross the San Francisco Bay called, of course, the San Francisco Bay Bridge, but why would Judy be singing its praises?

"The Trolley Song"
The Lyrics: Clang clang clang went the trolley!
Ding ding ding went the bell! Why: Covered by many other artists, this song evokes the mood of riding an old trolley car at the turn of the century in America.

| "Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart"
The Lyrics: Zing went the strings of my heart.
Why: "Zing" represents the sound a stringed instrument (perhaps a harp or violin) when its strings are struck by hand. Although it would be literally impossible for a heart's strings to make that noise. :)
