Stupid Band Names:

  • My first impression on seeing this band name was that, to convey an aura of "classiness" or something like that they had affixed the French prefix "Les" (meaning "the" [plural]; sounds sort of like the English word "lay" as nearly as the French sound can be rendered into English phonetics) to their name. Then I thought how "Les" (sounding like "less") could be a given name or nickname derived therefrom. Then I realized the band might be named for someone (probably a member thereof) named Les Humphries. That makes the name ambiguous in meaning. So I looked up the band, finding that the second guess above is the correct one. Band member Les Humphries was from England. He started the band in Hamburg, Germany (in a country adjacent to France, no less), than moved back to England after the band disbanded. So the name leaves both its pronunciation and its meaning ambiguous. Submitted by: Liberty Anderson

Story about this misheard lyric by: Minna

This song was one of my favorites when I was about 2-3 years old. My native language is Finnish and at that age I didn't speak any English (except numbers from 1 to 10, thanks and please) so lyrics never made any sense to me anyway. I was just singing along to my dad's records the way I thought they sounded like. But for some reason I still remember that I used to think that this song was about Pepsi-Cola. Pretty interesting, considering that I prefer Coca-Cola over Pepsi!
