Band Name Origins:

  • Just a note: The band's original name NYNUK was chosen by the band's manager (Maurice Starr) as a play on the title of a 1922 faux documentary called "Nanook of the North". Submitted by: memoria
  • Manager Maurice Starr originally gave the group the name Nynuk. Nynuk was an exclamation from the Three Stooges and the name of the dog in the movie The Lost Boys, but not even the former members know where Starr came up with this name. When the group signed to Columbia Records, executives insisted that the group get a new name, for obvious reasons. “New Kids On The Block,” an introductory rap co-written by Donnie Wahlberg and Maurice Starr, was one of the first songs recorded. This was suggested and used as the new name although Starr didn’t think it was catchy enough. The five word phrase was later shortened to NKOTB. Submitted by: Suzanne

Nonsensical Song Lyrics:

"Tonight"
The Nonsensical Lyrics:
We met a lot of people... and girls.
Why They're Nonsensical:
Are they suggesting that girls aren't people? Or do they mean "especially girls"? If so, that's what they should've said in this line. (Of course, it would require more syllables, but I'm sure they could've rewritten the song to accommodate those syllables.)
Submitted by: Celeste
"The Right Stuff (You Got it)"
The Nonsensical Lyrics:
I can see it when you walk,
Tell it when you talk,
I can see it in everything you do, even in your thoughts
Why They're Nonsensical:
You mean you can read the person's mind?! I don't know that it's at all possible to see anything in one's thoughts, let alone know one's thoughts! Unless you're a psychic...which I doubt the narrator is.
Submitted by: Elmar Diaz

Insincere Song Lyrics:

"I Wanna Be Loved By You "
The Insincere Lyrics:
Joe: 'I might be young but I'm not too young to let you know how I feel

That has got the be the most insincere lyric I've ever heard in my life.

Summer ended
winter started
it got colder
when we parted ways

It just seems like it's dirty. I just envision two people writhing against each other. L.O.L!

Bad Grammar in Song Lyrics:

"Officially Over"
The Lyrics:
It's officially over, it's officially over
There ain't nothing you can say that can fix your wrong
Why:
Simply said, if there "ain't nothing" there is something, isn't there? (So glad to vent this somewhere, btw) :)
Submitted by: Shannon
"Summer Time"
The Lyrics:
You wasn't lookin for a man
when you saw me in the sand
and Cause we was feeling young love
Why:
These are just more examples of bad grammar in pop music.
The first lyric obviously should be "You weren't looking for a man when you saw me in the sand but you fell for the boy from the city."
The Second lyric should be "Cause we were feeling young love."

What A Band is Best Known For (aside from their music):

"Changing Their Image"
In 1994, several months before they broke up, New Kids On The Block were under new management and their manager suggested that they change their image from sweet and clean cut kids to 5 remarkably sexist and male chauvenistic men. The image change didn't hide the fact tha t the guys album Face The Music tanked and they broke up soon afterwards.
Submitted by: Celeste
"Screaming Female Fans"
New Kids On The Block, and other bands such as Take That, and Backstreet Boys are notorious for attracting hordes of screaming female fans to their live shows.
Submitted by: Celeste
"Milli Vanilli Syndrome"
After Milli Vanilli were exposed as frauds in 1990 tabloids began to dig around to find out who else had fallen prey to Milli Vanilli Syndrome. All lipsyncing accusations fell into the laps of the New Kids after a disgruntled ex-employee accused the group of lip syncing at their concerts. Proctor appeared on the Arsenio Hall show to tell his side of the story. That then manager Maurice Starr was some sort of a musical wizzard and he could imulate any of the New Kids's voices. The New Kids appeared on the Arsenio Hall show a week afterwards to refute the accusations that they lip synced at their concerts by performing live.

Bad Ringtone Choices:

"Hangin' Tough"
The Lyrics:
Everybody's always talkin' 'bout who's on top
Don't cross our path 'cause you're gonna get stomped
We ain't gonna give anybody any slack
And if you try to keep us down we're gonna come right back
And you know we're hangin' tough
Hangin' tough, hangin' tough,
Are you tough enough?
Hangin' tough, Hangin' tough, hangin' tough,
We're rough
Why:
I'd hate to be a person with little-to-no street cred and have this ringtone go off. Someone might think that you're a complete and total loser who has to boast about how you're "able" to defend yourself in a fight.
