During the psychedelic days, records faded in and out; things became other things. I write from instinct, from an inexplicable sparkle. I don't know why I'm writing what I'm writing. Usually, I let my hands wander on my guitar. And I sing anything. I play anything. Music is forever; music should grow and mature with you, following you right on up until you die. Once you name the unnamable, you get numb. Why am I so soft in the middle when the rest of my life is so hard? Submitted by: LucidLupin
| (interviewer Jon Landau:) Didn't you visit Dylan's apartment once and ruffle through the waste to see 'how Dylan did it'.? (Paul Simon:) You're nuts. (Jon Landau:) I heard you did that. (Paul Simon, laughing:) Yeah, I once fed a journalist that story, but it's crazy. I can't see why anyone would think they'll find anything by looking through his trash?!' Submitted by: Magnus

Story about this misheard lyric by: Robert Sissons I may have heard that 'Homeward Bound' was written in Widnes in north-east England, so thought it was logical that Paul Simon might refer to the region again in another song. |

"Darling Lorraine"
The Funny Lyrics: What! You don't like the way I chew?
Let me tell you... Why They're Funny: Brilliant. Why don't noisy eaters get more mentions in songs? This is just wonderfully observed; when your lover gets narky about the way you chew, get your coat, pal, it's all over. Great song, too.

"Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes"
The Nonsensical Lyrics: And I could go 'whoo hoo ooo ooo, ooo ooo ooo ooo'
And everyone would know what I was talking about I mean everybody here would know exactly what I was talking about. Why They're Nonsensical: Actually, Paul, I don't think anyone would know what you're talking about if you go 'whoo hoo ooo ooo, ooo ooo ooo ooo'; they'd be confused.

| "You Can Call Me Al"
The Nonsensical Lyrics: He doesn't speak a language, he holds no currency.
(later) He says Amen and Hallelujah! Why They're Nonsensical: How does he say that if he doesn't speak a language? This logic is inconsistent. Clearly the guy in question is speaking English!
