Reo Speedwagon

Band Name Origins:

  • R. E. Olds was born in the Geneva-on-the-Lake area of Northern Ohio. His company made the REO Speedwagon truck which was popular for hauling fire fighting equipment and other things during the late 40s to the early 60s. I saw an REO Speedwagon truck in the Canadian Automotive Museum in Oshawa, Ontario. A placard near the truck explained all this and it also said that the American band took its name from this vehicle. Submitted by: MyWheels Have Turned Towards Oshawa
  • In HIgh School the band was in search of a name. When they walked into one of their classes the words REO Speedwagon was written in huge letters across the board. They thought it sounded cool and adopted the name. Submitted by: bribri

Song Parody Fragments:

"Take It On The Run"
Better Lyrics:
When you stuff toilet paper under your behind

I got the inspiration for this lyric from the lyric following the real lyrics (That I don't think it's true babe) because it reminds me of me stuffing toilet paper under my behind, buy my grandfather (who died January 11, 1994) told me not to say the above lyrics.
Original Lyrics:
And even if it is, keep this in mind

Lyrics Pronunciation:

"Don't Let Him Go"
The Lyrics:
He's got plenty of cash, he's got plenty of friends
He drives women wild as he drives up in the Mercedes Benz
He's a candle with a sick at both ends (he's hot)
Why:
Kevin Cronin does this with any songs he sings; he pronounces words with a short "e" by adding a long "a'" sound to a one syllible word gives it two syllibles. In this song, Benz as "bay-ends" and ends as "a-ends". I hate it when he does that.

What A Band is Best Known For (aside from their music):

"Little Rascals Reenactment"
At the beginning of the song 'Tough Guys' there's a sampled snippet of a Little Rascals episode where Alfalfa is having a picnic with a girl. Sparky asks Alfalfa about him being in their 'He-Man Woman Hater's Club' and the latter says 'I'm sorry but I have to live my own life'. On stage live singer Kevin Cronin and the guitarist re-enact and lip-synch the dialog before the music starts up, just like on the 'High Infidelity' album.

Music With a Warning Label:

"Sweet Time (single)"
During the autumn of 1982 the economy was still suffering big time from the post-Vietnam War era recession, which was the worst economic situation since the Great Depression (sound familiar?). November had Congressional elections and Reaganomics hadn't really made an effect yet. Pres. Reagan's GOP cohorts in Congress generally took a "midterm" election trouncing because of this (deja vu ?). Other people deviced ways to beat the inflationary doldrums. One method was for record labels to issue 1-sided 45s. The single would cost about 1/2 that of the normal 2-sided variety. The B-side (flip) simply said "Do not play this side". Only a handful of 1-sided 45s were even issued. One of them was a Go-Gos hit and another notorious "recession buster" was "Sweet Time" by REO Speedwagon which peaked at #26. As the economy improved in 1983 this brief trend was squelched.
