- Persephone - It's beautiful! Persephone was the daughter of Demeter, Greek goddess of the harvest. Persephone was picking flowers with her maidens and wandered across a strange flower she wanted to fill her basket with . From the ground Hades came in a black chariot and stole Persephone away. Before she could be rescued she ate five palmagranite seeds, the food of the dead. Therefore she must stay five months of the year in the underworld as the wife of Hades. Demeter refuses to grow crops in that time because she is so sad, and so we have winter. The name probably has something to do with the time of year she was born. Submitted by: Victoria
