"Smiling Faces Sometimes"
Opening Lines: Smiling faces sometimes pretend to be your friend.
Comments: "Smiling Faces Sometimes" by the trio known as the Undisputed Truth was a #3 smash hit in 1971 for the Tamla subsidy label of Motown. The Undisputed Truth was produced by Norman Whitfield and the original line up of the group that sang "Smiling Faces Sometimes" were Joe Harris, Billie Rae Calvin and Brenda Joyce. Originally "Smiling Faces Sometimes" was recorded by another Norman Whitfield produced act, the Temptations, but it went no where with that group. The Undisputed Truth also sold the song "Smiling Faces Sometimes" by use of their music that was psychedelic in nature, unusual clothing and large Afros and white makeup in their representation of a trend known as psychedelic soul.

"Smiling Faces Sometimes"
The Lyrics: Smiling faces sometimes pretend to be your friend
Smiling faces show no traces of the evil that lurks with in Smiling faces, smiling faces sometimes They don't tell the truth uh Smiling faces, smiling faces Tell lies And got proof Why: The #3 song, "Smiling Faces Sometimes" was a Motown song written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong and originally released and recorded by the Temptations that didn't have much success with it. Then came along the threesome known as the Undisputed Truth on the Tamla subsidiary lapel of Motown with their rather funky looking post modern psychedelic influenced look. After they recorded "Smiling Faces Sometimes" it became an instant hit (unfortunately their only one in the pop charts). "Smiling Faces Sometimes" is a very uptempo, if not rather psychedelic sounding tune, but the message is at least kind of scary about the lesson of "smiling faces" (it did come out of the fact many young people of the time were very very suspicious of President Richard Nixon, and obviously for very good reasons), if not nearly depressing to at least maybe paranoid, if you stopped and thought about all the times that a "smiling face" might be leading you on and not being truthful or helpful.
