"Cry of the Wild Goose" (MP3)
Wild goose, brother goose, witch's vest.
Wild goose, brother goose, which is best?
Whenever I see the lyrics to this song posted on the internet, they invariably claim the lyrics are: 'Wild goose, brother, which is best/A wand'ring fool or a heart at rest?' And that's the way I'd always heard the song as well .... But recently I've gotten the song on CD (three different versions of it -- each by Laine), and can say beyond any and all doubt that the correct phrase is 'A wand'ring FOOT or a heart at rest?' The final 't' is soft (Frankie concentrates on the vowels), but distinct in all three versions. Especially so when listened to with headphones. The 'heart'/'foot' metaphor is also much more poetically correct than than the mixed one of 'heart'/'fool.'

Every time I hear a new born baby cry
Or catch a thief
Or see the sky.
Every time I hear a new born baby cry
Or touch a leaf
Or see the sky.
Every time I hear a new born baby cry
Or torture Lee
Or see the sky.
Every time I hear a new born baby cry
Or touch a leaf
Or see the sky.
Everytime I see a newborn baby cry
Or hear a leaf
Or touch the sky
Then I know why I believe.
Everytime I hear a newborn baby cry
Or touch a leaf
Or see the sky
Then I know why I believe.

Other than "There's a bell" the lyrics were garbled and I couldn't interpret them at all, not even the misheard lyrics.

Allan Mustard adds: "Found on Lyrics on Demand website. As American society has become more urban, rurally rooted words are being forgotten and misheard. A 'dogie' ('dough-gutted' calf) is an orphan calf. 'Dogie' came to be used by drovers as slang for any immature bovine."
