Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Ah-say-intopie-oppa-maybe-uppendie
The Story: A lot of people have misquoted the lyrics in this song from Disney's Hocus Pocus, performed by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. There are numerous covers on YouTube and even a novelization of the movie that includes the lyrics to the song. They even repeat the same spell in Hocus Pocus 2! And without fail, most people get the lyrics wrong; they say "alpha" instead of "oppa". If you look at the witches' lips when they say it, you can see they say "oppa" not "alpha" and the subtitles on the DVD and Disney+ both say "oppa", not "alpha". Many of the covers on YouTube contain the incorrect "alpha", as well as the novelization and when the spell is repeated in Hocus Pocus 2, the same actresses say the wrong word! - Submitted by: Justin

The Story: In the 1993 film Hocus Pocus, Bette Midler sings a witch-themed version of "I'll Put a Spell on You." The last verse is a supposedly gibberish incantation that enchants the audience to dance until they die (they get better), but I heard something more English in the lyrics. - Submitted by: TheRaven7

Does anyone know who ate my hero?
Did you ever know that you're my hero?
The Story: My boyfriend said that kids used to sing it this way on the school bus when he was young. They were referring to a hero sandwich, of course. - Submitted by: Frann

I can fly higher than an eagle.
The Story: My daughter's boyfriend decided to sing this song to her, and when he came to 'I can fly higher than an eagle', he sang sea gull. He got upset because she busted out laughing. He really thought it said sea gull. - Submitted by: Penny Baxter
