Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Cooling engines
Cool the engines.
The Story: The misheard lyrics "Cooling engines" remind me of seeing the back of three identical jet planes and their engines and seeing the jets flying away in a somewhat diagonal pattern. - Submitted by: Selfish Sam
Don't look back, an engine is cranking
Don't look back
A new day is breaking
The Story: Was riding across country on Greyhound, and was listening to Don't Look Back on repeat most of the trip. I legitimately thought that's what it said! - Submitted by: Daniel Phillips
There's a black hole rising and I can't wait now
It's a bright horizon and I'm awake now
The Story: I always thought "Black Hole Rising" would be a good title for a sci-fi story. Someone finally created a video game with that name. - Submitted by: Old Comedywriter
Boston's,
"More Than A Feeling"
Born with a feeling
More than a feeling
The Story: Let me start off by telling you that my dad has something with drilling music from his day into my head. Well, when I was in first or second grade, this song use to come on the stations all the time. I thought it was 'Born with a feeling'. It made me cry because I had feelings at the time, and I thought the song describe them too well. I believed in those lyrics for several years. Turns out, when I was in 8th grade, my little brother straightened me out. I still like to believe that my lyrics are right because of my odd feelings. But now, even though I do cry, I also become embarassed. - Submitted by: Brittany

Cinnamon apple surprise
See Mary Ann walk away.
The Story: People think I'm nuts when I tell them this until they listen to the song and more often than not they go, 'Wow that is what it sounds like!'. - Submitted by: Julie P.

"More Than A Feeling"
Four letter-feeling
More than a feeling
The Story: Two other people have posted this, but I was at UCLA when this came out. I sang it this way in front of my friends. At least up until then, they were my friends. The rest of the song was gibberish as well. - Submitted by: Jellyfish
Boston's,
"More Than A Feeling"
I hear librarians walking away
or
I heard Maid Marian walking away
I see my Marianne walking away
The Story: First it was "I hear librarians walking away" then I figured out it was "I heard Maid Marian walking away" which made a lot more sense. Boston had to be about the biggest mushmouth band, I also heard "Piece of Pie" instead of Peace of Mind as another poster said. - Submitted by: Steve Lockwood

I woke up this morning and this summer's gone.
I woke up this morning and the sun was gone.
The Story: For years, this was my brother's anthem for the end of summer. It was played on the first day of schhol because of this lyric. Only when he was in law school did a rocker tell him, "I hate to ruin a Vassar family tradition, but it's 'I woke up this morning and the sun was gone.'" Everything changed--we needed a website like this YEARS ago!!!! - Submitted by: Andrew Vassar
Boston's,
"More Than A Feeling"
Till I'm seventy airports away
Till I see Marianne walk away
The Story: Just a weird kid...how that made sense I have no idea - Submitted by: Jean
Boston's,
"More Than a Feeling"
More than a weakling
More than a feeling
The Story: I thought at first this song was about "newbies". I misheard the lyrics as "More than a weakling", and I thought of some poor kid named Poindexter, sitting in class, while being pelted with gum. Never mind. - Submitted by: Aurora!

Morgan Freeman
More than a feeling
The Story: A guy at work sang along to this song and sang Morgan Freeman instead of More Than A Feelin' LOL. - Submitted by: Jackins

Till I see Marian walk away
The Story: I think people misspell the name Marian quite a lot and wanted to fix it - Submitted by: Alyssa

Too many apples to burn
See Marianne walk away.
The Story: Listening to radio and daughter was happily singing along. This was what she sang. Had never known the correct lyrics until I had to look it up afterwards. - Submitted by: jenny
I understand about in-the-city.
I understand about indecision.
The Story: I heard someone belt this line out in the boys locker room when I was in high school, 1978 baseball season: a guy nicknamed 'The Gizzer'. He got every song wrong. - Submitted by: wheat
Tangle in your hair
Take a look ahead.
The Story: I was a young girl when this came out, and tangles in my hair were something I was familiar with. The sad part is that I was well in to my 20's before I figured out what they were really saying. - Submitted by: Holly
Tinkle in your hair
Take a look ahead.
The Story: Not the most effective shampoo. - Submitted by: Doughnuts
All I want is to have my piece of pie.
All I want is to have my peace of mind.
The Story: This song came on the radio a lot during the early '80s when I was a toddler. It's not inconceivable that a 3-year-old would think it's a song about pie. - Submitted by: Holly
Take a look at him.
Take a look ahead.
The Story: The misheard lyrics "Take a look at him" used to remind me of seeing the Tokheim logo on some gas pumps. - Submitted by: Selfish Sam
