Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Chris Rea

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Chris Rea's, "Fool (If You Think It's Over)"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Moo If You Think It's Over.
The Real Lyrics:
Fool if you think it's over.
The Story: I was convinced this was the correct lyric for decades until I was with friends singing along to an oldies station, and they corrected me--with much hilarity. I still think it sounds a lot more like "Moo" than "Fool." - Submitted by: Robert Viagas
Chris Rea's, "Tell Me There's a Heaven"
The Misheard Lyrics:
And mama calls me in to pee
The Real Lyrics:
And mama calls me in for tea
The Story: I thought it had to do with his mother calling him to go to the bathroom! - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Chris Rea's, "Texas (1989)"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Well I’ve got a little brother
Seven meters high
The Real Lyrics:
Well I’ve got a little brother
Several meters high
The Story: 7 meters, in USA units, is nearly 23 feet. I thought maybe Chris (who is British) was exaggerating here, but it turns out I was just hearing him wrong. If “several” just means two (which is quite likely), that would make the singer’s brother roughly 6’7”, which makes far more sense. - Submitted by: Hu’s On First
Chris Rea's, "The Road to Hell (Part II)"
The Misheard Lyrics:
This ain’t no ideological discourse,
Oh no, this is the road to hell.
The Real Lyrics:
This ain’t no technological breakdown,
Oh no, this is the road to hell.
The Story: I was studying philosophy at the time and I guess I had heard the phrase “ideological discourse” so that’s what I heard Chris Rea sing and still do to this day. - Submitted by: Mark Williams
Chris Rea's, "The Road to Hell (Part ii)"
The Misheard Lyrics:
These ain't up on Jingelby Freeway
The Real Lyrics:
These ain't no upwardly mobile freeway
The Story: It really sounds like Jingelby Freeway. - Submitted by: Juni
