Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Culture Club

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Culture Club's, "Church of the Poison Mind"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Church of the boys in mind
The Real Lyrics:
Church of the Poison Mind
The Story: I thought that's what the song was when I heard it on AT40 and then learned from the late, great Casey Kasem that it was actually "Church of the Poison Mind". - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Culture Club's, "Church of the Poison Mind"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Step out like a Gotham child
I saw your eyes across the street.
The Real Lyrics:
Step out like a God found child
I saw your eyes across the street.
The Story: I didn't even know what 'Gotham' was. It just really sounded like it in the song (great song by the way, one of my favorites). So I looked it up, hmm, and nickname for NYC? That doesn't make any sense now, does it? So I looked up the normal lyrics. That makes a bit more sense! - Submitted by: Georgia
Culture Club's, "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Bit by laws without a reason
I'm prepared to let you go.
The Real Lyrics:
This boy loves without a reason
I'm prepared to let you go.
The Story: The first time I heard this, (I'm only 13) was a couple months ago. As I watched the music video for it, I really thought it was 'bit by laws'. Then about a month later as I was leaving for Greece, I wanted the lyrics with me. I saw it was 'this boy loves'. I thought that made more sense, but I still heard my version. Then today, I watched the video and finally heard the real words. I said them to myself the way he says them, with an 'a' sound instead of 'o' in boy. I said, "This bi loves without a reason". This (in Georgia's opinion) makes the most sense out of all of them! - Submitted by: Georgia
Culture Club's, "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I have died inside your eyes.
The Real Lyrics:
I have danced inside your eyes.
The Story: I always thought, 'How could that be real?' Then I found the real lyrics and was relieved that he wasn't singing of being of death. - Submitted by: Shelia
Culture Club's, "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Killing time
The Real Lyrics:
Give me time
The Story: Having to do with this, it was really Boy George's expression of saying "Give me time", but some could have heard "Killing time". - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Culture Club's, "I'll Tumble 4 Ya"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Did he say baby?
Or I'm mature

Did he say maybe?

Culture Club's, "I'll Tumble 4 Ya"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I'll double door ya
The Real Lyrics:
I'll tumble 4 ya
The Story: My best friend foolishly sang these lyrics in front (of all people) of my father when the song first came out. We were probably 6 or 7 years old. Now, at 24 my father still won't let her live that one down!!! - Submitted by: Lisa K
Culture Club's, "I'll Tumble 4 Ya"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Out in the foyer
I'll telephone you.
The Real Lyrics:
I'll tumble for ya
I'll tumble for you.
The Story: My mother, my sister, and I took the kids to Chuck E. Cheese last Saturday. The music was loud but the kids were louder. This song came on, and we adults were trying to figure out the lyrics. My version made sense to me. I thought it might be about somebody having to go to a formal occasion with her parents and wanting to be with her boyfriend instead. So she's going to sneak out into the foyer and call him. Finally, my sister said, 'Is that that song about tumbling for you?'. After listening closely for a while, that's what it sounded like. But it was really hard to hear over all the kids having fun. - Submitted by: Carolee

The Real Lyrics:
I'll tumble for ya.
The Story: In the 1980's, my older sister wanted the whole family to go see Culture Club for her birthday. I sat next to my mother, a native of San Diego. When they were playing this song, I heard my mother singing along, loudly, 'I'm from La Jolla! I'm from La Jolla!' Later, I had to break it to her that this wasn't what he was saying. - Submitted by: Margaret

You can imagine how pissed off I was! - Submitted by: Steven Ramos

The Story: Me, my dad and my sister were watching a soap and in a scene in a bar, this song was on in the background. My sister, who was about 10 at the time, started singing along with the wrong lyric. Me and my dad were like 'What did you just say?' and she told us what she said along with the story that she thought the song was about a girl being told off by her parents for making them late when they were going out! We still call it the Come On Amelia song, much to her embarassment. - Submitted by: Jen

Bet you got a good gun
Bet you know how
To have some fun in bed.

I'm better than the rest of the men.

To have some fun and then,
You turn it around on me because
I'm better than the rest of the men.
The Story: Well, I never grew up listening to Culture Club or paid any attention to them. One day this song comes on, and it happened to be the only song I had ever heard of theirs. When I heard it (in my version) the first thought that came to mind, 'Uh... is this singer gay?' ... Well. What can I say? duh. Anyway, I like Culture Club now, but I still can't get my icky version out of my head when that song comes on. - Submitted by: Raymond Tatum
