Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Janis Ian

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Janis Ian's, "At 17"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for you and me
The Real Lyrics:
I learned the truth at seventeen
That love was meant for beauty queens
The Story: All my life, I only knew a single line from this song, which I now have learned was completely misheard. I’d always thought the song was about finding one’s soulmate at a young age and being in love. Come to find out this is a sad song about not finding love because the singer doesn’t fit in with society’s standards of beauty. - Submitted by: Andrew

Janis Ian's, "At Seventeen"
The Misheard Lyrics:
And those of us with rabbit's faces
Lacking in the social graces.
The Real Lyrics:
And those of us with ravaged faces
Lacking in the social graces.
The Story: After mishearing the lyric, I was real surprised the first time I saw Janis Ian and realized she didn't look like a rabbit. I had envisioned her with big ears and truly enormous front teeth, like the Trix cereal rabbit. - Submitted by: SusanJH
