Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Man Overboard

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Man Overboard's, "Do·Ré·Mi"
The Misheard Lyrics:
What’s the pity about her
...
Screen door out in broad daylight
...
And reaching for a glass of water
Dry socks and ripped mat
...
Dandruff too, your cigarette ash
...
Your pubic hairs around my pillow
Your stubble in the sink
...
I’m proud of all the things I love
You wallow in a trough of trivia
...
Then stars to mirrors
...
Hatched underneath an armour crutch under stress
You’re better when it's calm
...
Look around - start a room up
Tell us why things raise a smile at parties
Lack inner humour
...
You’re wet - out of control
The Real Lyrics:
More's the pity about her
...
Squinting at broad daylight
...
Hands reaching for a glass of water
Dry socks and razor rash
...
Dandruff, doona, cigarette ash
...
Your pubic hairs are on my pillow
Your stubble rings the sink
...
I paddle in the things I love
You wallow in a swamp of trivia
...
Next door's camellias
...
Hatched underneath an arm
A crutch under stress
Your rudder when it's calm
...
Look around - start a rumour
Jealous wife scenes raise a smile at parties
Like anal humour
...
Your wit out of control
The Story: My lyrics are slightly better than the (crude) originals. 'Doona' started out as a brand name for a duvet in the 1970s that has become a generic word (in lowercase) in Australia. Anal humour - ewwww - this is why this song would never have made it in its original 1982 (different) form; it would have been banned for airplay. What a difference three years makes. - Submitted by: Davo
