Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Midnight Oil

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Midnight Oil's, "Antarctica"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I'm a landslide hummer
I'm a G.D. runner
The Real Lyrics:
I'm a landslide hummin', I'm a downhill runnin'
The Story: Singer Peter Garrett is known to be a Christian and he's very devoted to environtalism, human rights, justice and social issues covered by this band. And like Bono of U2, he walks the walk - not just talk the talk. So to hear a word like that sung by him would be shocking except that HE DOESN'T. It's his Australian snarling voice in full blossom here, and let's be honest - it can be difficult to discern at times for us listeners in North America. One thing about Midnight Oil is that they are an AUSTRALIAN band and they will let you know it. Some of their CDs say 'Australian product, Australian made', their lyrics are peppered with Australian pronouns and they utterly REFUSE to distill their accents for US, Canadian or UK audiences. And Peter Garrett's snarling uncompromising vocals are proof of this. I have seen this band during the 90s and they are very energetic and as 'Aussie' as a band can get. - Submitted by: 1993 Oiler
Midnight Oil's, "Beds are burning"
The Misheard Lyrics:
The time has come to save the bear
The Real Lyrics:
The time has come to say fair's fair
The Story: Well...isn't it time to save the bear? ;-) - Submitted by: Pete
Midnight Oil's, "Blue Sky Mine"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Indiana rain house down
The Real Lyrics:
In the end, the rain comes down.
The Story: My wife heard this song when living in Europe and swore up and down it was 'Indiana rain house down'. The lyrics in the cassette case (hey, it was the 80's) solved it for us. - Submitted by: Garf
Midnight Oil's, "Blue Sky Mine"
The Misheard Lyrics:
There'll be pee in your pocket tonight
The Real Lyrics:
There'll be pay in your pocket tonight
The Story: Peeing in someone's pocket means almost the same thing as the original lyrics did anyway - Submitted by: Davo
Midnight Oil's, "Blue Sky Mining"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Who's going to shave me
The Real Lyrics:
Who's going to save me
The Story: first heard on AM band radio, bit fuzzy sound, hard to understand the lyrics at the time. Peter Garrett, the lead singer is bald and it sounded so weird, I could not understand why this bald man is singing 'who's going to shave me'? - Submitted by: Phil
