Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Mitch Ryder

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Mitch Ryder's, "Devil With A Blue Dress On/Good Golly, Miss Molly"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Good golly, Miss Molly,
Your skirt like to fall.
or
Your shirt like to fall.
or
You sure like to fall.
or
You sure like the fall.
or
You sure like a ball.
The Real Lyrics:
Good golly, Miss Molly
You sure like to ball.
The Story: As a little girl, I really puzzled over this, wondering whether Molly liked to fall herself, liked some article of clothing to fall, or liked the fall (the season, I supposed). Then someone explained to me that it was none of the above, since the word was ball, not fall. Even then I wasn't yet old enough to understand it, being hardly old enough to understand the story of Cinderella, for example. So for quite sometime thereafter I puzzled over whether it was a baseball, football, or volleyball, etc., that Miss Molly was so fond of. - Submitted by: Stephnie Craddock
Mitch Ryder's, "Devil With A Blue Dress"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Everybody's movin', movin', movin', everybody's movin' home.
The Real Lyrics:
Devil with a blue dress, blue dress, blue dress, devil with a blue dress on.
The Story: In about 1963, my 14-yr-old brother was singing the misheard lyrics along with the radio. My oldest brother and I really ragged on him for this one for years. - Submitted by: George Mudrovich
