Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Bring your bottles, with tobaccos, it’ll soon be summertime

If her daddy's rich, take her out to the mill
If her daddy's rich, take her out for a meal.
The Story: Apparently, I've been miss hearing this for around half a century…… - Submitted by: The Venerable Stan
If her daddy's rich,
Take her out for a mil
If her daddy's rich,
Take her out for a meal
The Story: It made more sense to me that if her daddy was wealthy and the singer was a penniless hippie bum, he might more logically make it with the honey, then ransom the rich guy's sweet baby girl for a "mil" (short for a million bucks). But by all means, a destitute hippie should buy dinner for a rich man's daughter who probably has a weekly allowance that surpasses his annual panhandling income. Heh heh heh, but lyrics don't have to make sense, I guess. They just need to rhyme. And "feel" does rhyme better with "meal" than "mil" - Submitted by: Tim
In the Summertime when the weather is fine
In the summertime, when the weather is high
The Story: It made sense that the weather would be fine in the summertime, not high. - Submitted by: No
In the Summertime when the weather is hot
In the Summertime when the weather is high
The Story: The reason why I submitted this lyric is because of a new Macy's commercial. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
In the summertime when the winter is hot
In the summertime when the weather is hot
The Story: Nothing much, just that it is what I thought I heard and it confused me because it usually isn't hot in the winter and summer and winter are two different seasons. I did think it was kind of like the things in Oh, Susanna, though. - Submitted by: Bridget Ilene Delaney
We're always happy
Life's for living, yeah, that's a sound philosophy

The Story: A friend INSISTED that is what the song said... LOL!! GOSTA love the Internet. : ) - Submitted by: EthericBliss
When the winter's here, yeah, it's party time -- bring your bottle-wagging rifles, it will soon be summertime
When the winter's here, yeah, it's party time -- bring your bottle, wear your bright clothes, it will soon be summertime
The Story: This reminds me of when I was a kid, in the winter when it was too cold to shoot "real" rifles outside we used to have a shooting range for pellet rifles in the basement with a row of small plastic bottles mounted on door-stop springs so they'd swing around when you hit them. - Submitted by: Fuzzbean
