Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Paul Davis

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Paul Davis', "Sweet Life"
The Misheard Lyrics:
We always dreamed we'd make a lot of money, oh but I don't mind it anymore
The Real Lyrics:
We always dreamed we'd make a lot of money, oh but I don't mind being poor
The Story: I heard this song first when I was 7 or 8 years old, sometime in 1983 or 1984. I didn't realize the lyrics were actually "I don't mind being poor" until just today, at age 38!! I always thought he was singing "I don't mind it anymore" (not making a lot of money). It made sense to me that he would sing that, but I guess I was off on the lyrics. It does sound like he's singing "I don't mind it anymore" rather than "I don't mind being poor" if you listen closely, or maybe it's just the way he's singing it. Somehow, when I was growing up, I always thought of the "Wizard Of Oz" movie (with Judy Garland, from 1939) and of the Cowardly Lion every time I heard this song. I must have probably first watched The Wizard of Oz around the same time, so that's how it probably got related. - Submitted by: Codi Preston D.

The Real Lyrics:

The Story: I've heard this song since I was a child in the mid 1980s, and I actually thought for the longest time that Paul Davis was singing "I don't mind it anymore". I didn't realize he sang "I don't mind being poor" until one day about a year ago when I looked at the lyrics. - Submitted by: Codi Preston D.
