Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Fool for the red-eye
Smooth operator
The Story: At the time this song was at the height of its popularity, I couldn't (and didn't particularly care to, since I didn't really like it much) understand the rest of the lyrics. So I made up my own story that it was a Battlestar Galactica fan-song. Particularly, an indictment of Baltar, and the others who let themselves be taken in the the Cylons' treachery... since one of the Cylons' most memorable characteristics were their roving red eyes, their dupes would be 'fools for the red-eye'. - Submitted by: Miyuki Shirayama

He's a cool rockin' daddy.
He's a smooth operator.
The Story: My family and I used to sing songs to the radio while driving on family holidays. My mother sang these misheard lyrics. We all started to sing the words to play along with her. Eventually we all cracked up because we couldn't keep singing those stupid words. Mum had no idea why we were laughing. When we told her about the misheard words she was very imbarrased. - Submitted by: sean

Smooth hot potato
Smooth operator
The Story: A girl I babysat was singing along to the song. But because she had the common children's habit of making Rs andLs and Ws sound alike, it sounded a bit like 'Smooth Hot Potato'. I asked if that's what she was singing (I knew the real lyric). She said 'Yes,' and proceeded to sing it that way for some time. - Submitted by: Scott Falkner

Spoon umbrella
Smooth operator
The Story: My wife asked me, "Why there is a song singing about umbrella? What's interesting of a spoon?" - Submitted by: SummerSurfer
You gimmee, you gimmee a Swedish tattoo
That's why I'm in love with blue.
You give me, you give me the sweetest taboo
That's why I'm in love with you.
The Story: I truly thought that is what she was singing. I wondered to myself, 'Well, how is it different from other tattoos? What's it look like?' It wasn't long before I heard the DJ announce the artist and title, but I still sang it that way. I like to laugh at myself. =0) - Submitted by: methywoz
