Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

I drank the gravy down
To save a clown
This emptiness defines you
And take from this tortured sound
My pants are down
The shallowness confines you
Betray and degrade me now
I'll savor how
This emptiness defines you
And take from this tortured sound
My hands are bound
The shallowness confines you
The Story: I was only half listening, as I was in an argument with a friend, and I absolutely misheard this when it was sung the final time (The only time I actually tried to listen), and I hadn't eaten in a day and a half. I had also just seen it, and I was at that time into sexual humor, rather than dark humor. No special story. I still sing it this way. - Submitted by: Rowan Mauldin
Then she told me she had a d***
It sounded like she'd used it once before.
Then she told me she had a gun
It sounded like she'd used it once before.
The Story: It was the bleeped out version that MTV ran. I was like, 'Wow, one bad experience with a transvestite there, huh? Who did you write this about now? Hmmm?' Then I heard it on the radio. Yes, I was officially a target for making fun of for the rest of the day. - Submitted by: Isabel
Fake it if you're out of direction
Fake it if you don't belong, yeah
Fake it if you like the Bankstown w***e
You're such a f**cking hypocrite.
Fake it if you like infection, oooooh
The Story: I think my version made more sense. - Submitted by: David
You're such a f***in' immigrant
You're such a f***in' hypocrite
The Story: I heard it this way a long time ago and still sing it this way. - Submitted by: Cassie Donahue
I hear you labeled me a liar
'Cause I can't sing, yep that's true.
I hear you label me a liar
'cause I can't seem to get this through.
The Story: I thought Shaun (lead singer) had sang that line in the song (the line I thought he'd said), because there were lots of people saying he's just a crappy Kurt Cobain impersonator. I figured he was trying to be a smarta** to those people. - Submitted by: Derek
