Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

18 and life with Karen
or
18 and life without her.
18 and life, you got it.
The Story: I was singing this song in the car with my best friend. He was a die-hard Skid Row fan. I was singing both these misheard lyrics. He got so angry. We had to look on the internet for the right lyrics. We haven't really talked since because he was right. [Ed.'s note: Or your friend needed to take a chill pill.] - Submitted by: Cecilia
18 and life clam chowder
18 and life, you know.
18 and life, you got it
18 and life, you know.
The Story: I was a Skid Row fan in the early '90's. The girl I was dating at the time told me about a friend's mother who thought these were the lyrics. - Submitted by: John
Accidents will happen, they all heard Rikki say.
Fired his six-shot to the wind, then shot...Lynwood shot Louann.
Accidents will happen," they all heard Rikki say
He fired his six-shot to the wind that child blew a child away
The Story: I'm almost too embarrassed to admit that's what I've been singing all these years. - Submitted by: Lindsay
Ricky was a young boy,
he had a heart of gold
Ricky was a young boy,
he had a heart of stone
The Story: Yet another one from my lyrically challenged friend. We were playing at the park in 1989 when she suddenly burst into song, singing the lyrics 'Ricky was a young boy, he had a heart of gold' My sister and I asked her what she had just sung to us and she repeated the lyrics. Well, we started laughing and told her what the song was about and the actual lyrics. She then didn't like the song as much and didn't sing it at all anymore. A few weeks ago, we were in our college classmate Kate's car and the song came on the radio and I smiled and fought back the urge to sing my friend's messed-up lyrics to remind her of her mistake. Oh well. - Submitted by: Sandi
She nicks my children
Then she kicks me
Out and says she married me for fun.
She nicks my shin
Then she kicks me in
And says she buried me for fun.
The Story: Well, not really. But I did think it was funny that Bach was singing about marriage when none of the Skids were married. - Submitted by: Alice
That beats the scar of skin so deep
That beats the scar of sin so deep
The Story: This kind of makes sense, since scars do appear on skin. Also, the Stranglers had a song called “Skin Deep”, so it made sense here. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Haunt my house of pain, and fill my cycle up.
Haunt my house of pain, and feel my psycho love.
The Story: My mistake was discovered whilst singing very loudly to the song at my then 'heavy metal mad' boyfriend's house in an effort to impress him with my rock credentials. I imagined that Seb Bach (the lead singer) would have a huge throbbing, roaring moterbike that needed filling with petrol. Needless to say my boyfriend almost needed medical help after hearing my gaffe. - Submitted by: Faye
