Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Do not graduate!
Gotta get my punk ass off the street
Can I graduate?
Can I get my punk ass off the street
The Story: When this song came out, I had a buddy who was considering dropping out of high school and this was his theme song, since he thought the lyrics were "Do not graduate!". - Submitted by: been_a_son
Seagulls walking by in slowmo.
She goes walking by in slowmo.
The Story: This was the only part of the song I know. It took me over a year to findly realize that I had been mishearing the part and find the song. - Submitted by: Carbo
I want to taste the salt of your skin some kind of plebian, a plebian
I want to taste the salt of your skin The soft dive of oblivion, oblivion
The Story: I am notorious for not being able to make out what a singer is singing...However I usually know ahead of time I have no clue, and I just put in my best guess. Everyone kept asking what is he saying there...I guess no one cared enough to look up the lyrics. I said 'my best guess is plebian.' My friends looked at me for a second, then they all said 'nah' and whent on with the conversation. - Submitted by: Skadog
Before you take a swig
Before you take a swing
The Story: I thought it had to do with taking a sip! - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Mother La-chenco
I'll never let you go.
The Story: My boyfriend asked me if I knew the "Mother La-chenco" song, and I couldn't figure out what he was talking about. I told him to sing it, and almost fell over laughing/crying at him. - Submitted by: Kathleen
And I would overspend
And I would understand
The Story: Could have been he was overspending! - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Another kachinko
I'll never let you go.
The Story: I asked my dad what a 'kachinko' was. He told me he didn't know and told me to look it up in the dictionary. When I did, I couldn't understand why it wasn't there. Then I found out what they were really saying. - Submitted by: Anna
And I speak to you like the colors to the birds
And I speak to you like the chorus to the verse
The Story: This is what I thought they were singing for years, until I looked up the actual lyrics (I also didn't realize they were singing about crystal meth at first). Interestingly enough, birds have tetrachromatic vision, so they can see more colors than we can. - Submitted by: Hu's On First
She comes 'round and seagulls follow me.
She comes 'round and she goes down on me.
The Story: As a professional solo performer of contemporary covers over the years, I have been corrected many times for amazing listening gaffes - such as this one. The way I heard it, when 'she' comes 'round it's like a day at the beach. Clearly this was not the kind of swell the lyricist had in mind. - Submitted by: Melanie Williamson
The sky was cold
The sky was gold
The Story: Why do we hear "cold" instead of "gold", and vice versa? - Submitted by: Cody Finke
