Misheard Song Lyrics -> Stories -> Toby Keith

Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody. For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.

This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.

Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Toby Keith's, "A Little Less Talk"
The Misheard Lyrics:
A drug-honest dude tried to mess with my head.
The Real Lyrics:
A drunk on a stool tried to mess with my head.
The Story: I'm probably one of the biggest Toby fans out there. I know all his songs, I take annual trips to his concerts, and I have all the cds. But I was always skeptical about this lyric. I wondered what a drug user had anything to do with this song. So I finally looked up the lyrics and found out I was a little off. - Submitted by: Allie
Toby Keith's, "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue"
The Misheard Lyrics:
When we see a grown man crying
The Real Lyrics:
When we see Old Glory flying
The Story: Kind of sounded like a reference to “Start Me Up” by the Rolling Stones - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Toby Keith's, "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue"
The Misheard Lyrics:
We'll put a bullet in your ass!
The Real Lyrics:
We'll put a boot in your ass
The Story: They play American Soldier for my husband's Military Awards & promotion nights. When I song the song loud & proud, my husband had to whisper to me the correct lyric! But as a military brat & wife of over 30yrs, I enjoy my version more. Thanks😉 [Editor's note: If it was the song with this line in it, it was "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue", not "American Soldier".] - Submitted by: Erica Ramsey; USAF
Toby Keith's, "I Love This Bar"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I love this dog
or
I love this bark
The Real Lyrics:
I love this bar
The Story: I thought it was about dogs. - Submitted by: Cody Finke
Toby Keith's, "I Should Have Been A Cowboy"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Wearing my sex shoe
The Real Lyrics:
I'd be wearing my six shooter.
The Story: Ever since I was a kid I thought Toby Keith was saying 'sex shoe'. I never understood what that meant, now I know why. My boyfriend couldn't catch his breath he was laughing so hard. - Submitted by: Staci
Toby Keith's, "I Wanna Talk About Me"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I like talkin' about you you you you you Sugar Lee
The Real Lyrics:
I like talkin' about you you you you usually
The Story: My mom and I were puzzling out the words to this song in the car, after having heard it on the radio. We'd been singing for maybe half an hour when my younger sister says very suddenly, 'It's 'Sugar Lee'.' My mom almost had an accident from laughing so hard. - Submitted by: Elfee
Toby Keith's, "I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Cryin'"
The Misheard Lyrics:
Saw my lawyer, Mr Tegucigalpa.
The Real Lyrics:
Saw my lawyer, Mr. Good News, He Got Me.
The Story: As I was eating in a restaurant, I heard this song (previously unknown to me) playing on the sound system. It struck me as strange that it seemed like he called his lawyer by the name of the capital of Honduras. I suspected a mishearing. So I memorized enough of the lyrics that I was reasonably sure I did hear correctly that, when I got home I could search by google.com and identify the song. When I did, I found out that as I expected, the lawyer's name was not Mr. Tegucigalpa. I furthermore found that he wasn't even saying the lawyer's name, but 'good news he got me'! - Submitted by: Donna Gelpigi
Toby Keith's, "Lost You Anyway"
The Misheard Lyrics:
I’d lost you, Hemingway.
The Real Lyrics:
I’d lost you anyway.
The Story: In 2010, I was at a Toby Keith Concert with a few of my Friends in Caddot, Wisconsin. Before he was gonna perform, I went upstage and asked him if he was gonna play “I’d lost you, Hemingway”. He didn’t know what I was talking about and we both started laughing. I decided to sing until he corrected me by saying “It’s ‘I’d lost you anyway”. To this day, on November 28, 2024, I still remember that day! Rip Toby Keith and Ernest Hemingway. Gone but not forgotten. - Submitted by: Jake Thompson
Toby Keith's, "Made in America"
The Misheard Lyrics:
He ain't pickle dust; he's just made in America.
The Real Lyrics:
He ain't prejudiced; he's just made in America
The Story: I knew "pickle dust" couldn't be right, but I couldn't understand the lyrics until I listened to it several times. - Submitted by: Bonnie Hoy
