Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).
The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia album at Amazon.com
He was on his way from Canada
Andy Warhol said hello, and he said hi, what's doin bro?
Don't trust your soul to no backwards Southern lawyer.
He was on his way home from Candletop
Andy Wolloe said hello, and he said hi, what's doin', Wo
Don't trust your soul to no backwoods Southern lawyer.
The Story: I've been hearing this song since I was ten, and nothing about the mishead lyric has struck me as odd until tonight. I just thought there must have been some other guy in this little town named Andy Warhol. Then all the sudden I thought of 'I Shot Andy Warhol' and my husband and I have been laughing for an hour. So I googled and found this website. Lili Taylor should totally cover this song. - Submitted by: Maria padhila
I saw the look and I realized
She was seducing my man with her eyes
And yet I couldn't blame you
'Cause she was delicious
And you smiled me assurance
But still I was jealous
Then you took me home and found me alone
You sat myself down and you sang me this song
Baby, ships in the night
With eyes that are flashing
Splurging and passing with time on their hands
She's a ship in the night looking for love
And nobody's taking your man
After the fight I enjoyed him so
Playing my game
I'm a woman, you know
And nothing was said in the car going home
And my ego exploded, 'cause the jealousy showed
And then in our bedroom you stopped and we talked
And I crowded your thunder and sang you this song
I cannot follow through each waking day
And I know some lovely eyes get in your way
But then you're a big boy
And baby, I know when the days don't surrender
My ships sail home to me
I saw her look and I realized
She was seducing my man with her eyes
And yet I couldn't blame you
For she was delicious
And you smiled me assurance
And still I was jealous
Then you took me home and finally alone
You set myself down and you sang me this song
Baby, ships in the night
Eyes that are flashing
Flirting and passing with time on their hands
She's a ship in the night looking for love
And nobody's taking your man
Acting as though I enjoyed him so
Playing my game
I'm a woman, you know
And nothing was said in the car going home
And my ego exploded, 'cause your jealousy showed
And then in our bedroom you stalked and you talked
And I quieted your thunder and sang you this song
I cannot follow through each waking day
And I know some lovely eyes get in your way
But then you're a big boy
Baby, I know when the day's sun surrenders
My ship sails home to me
The Story: Have submitted only the verses that differ. I much prefer my lyrics, especially at the end where I don't believe she would be so forgiving and, therefore, she says 'My SHIPS sail home to me.' - meaning she is having plenty 'on the side' too! - Submitted by: Davo
Andy Warhol said 'Hello'.
Andy Wolloe said 'Hello'.
The Story: When I was a kid and first heard this song, I thought it sounded like 'Andy Warhol', at a time when I'd heard of Andy Warhol but had no clear idea who he was. As I learned more and more about him, he seemed less and less to fit into that song, so finally I concluded I surely wasn't hearing that name right. But it wasn't until we had internet lyric sites that I finally could discover the actual name of the Andy in this song. - Submitted by: JoAnne Hurley
And his cheap house had never left town
And that's one body that'll never be found
She insisted on this when she aims her gun
And his cheatin' wife had never left town
And that's one body that'll never be found
See, little sister don't miss when she aims her gun
The Story: The nonsensical "cheap house" interpretation is due to poor mixing: An electric guitar masks the vocal in this line. - Submitted by: Charles J. Eckard
Annie got scared and licked her butt
Andy got scared and left the bar
The Story: Who would have thought someone would lick their butt? - Submitted by: Cody Finke
