Misheard lyrics (also called mondegreens) occur when people misunderstand the lyrics in a song. These are NOT intentional rephrasing of lyrics, which is called parody.
For more information about the misheard lyrics available on this site, please read our FAQ.
This page contains a list of the songs that have stories about their misheard lyrics submitted.
Song names are sorted by first letter, excluding A and The. This is sorted by song title only, not
by song title and performer. So if two different performers preformed the same song, you'll see
misheard lyrics for both on the same page (provided the song title was spelt the same both times, and
misheard lyrics have been submitted for both!).

Yes',
"All The Good People"
Move on back to Squirm
and
Move me on to anywhere, Squirm
Move on back two squares
and
Move me on to any black square
The Story: On day I heard this on the radio and wondered why they said that they were going to Squirm, which I thought was some imaginary place they made up for the song, and I was convinced that that was the lyrics. So I asked my mom where Squirm might happen to be (even though if it did exist I knew it wasn't real) and she said that it was moving on to squares, not going to Squirm, and every time I hear that part I start laughing. :) I still think that's the lyrics, sometimes. - Submitted by: Wendy

Always just beyond my tough,
Though I needed you so much
Always just beyond my touch,
Though I needed you so much'

Yes',
"Love Will Find A Way"
And each action new
I eat at Chez Nous.
The Story: Well, not necessarily funny. I've been a Yes fan for almost their entire career. (Ok, so I'm a little ripe.) My husband pointed out the correct lyrics. Dumbfounded, I said, 'No, that can't be true.' When he showed me the CD liner notes, I could only respond: 'That's one of the lamest, dumbest lyrics I ever heard!' - Submitted by: Stella

"Owner of a Lonely Heart"
Owner of the Trojan horse OR Owner of the Trojan heart
Owner of a lonely heart
The Story: This song came out when I was in high school and learned about both kinds of Trojans: the kind from ancient Troy (history lessons), and the kind from the drugstore (classmates). Took a lot of listening to figure out the correct lyric. - Submitted by: Daniel M.
There you are!
Making love, but you sure gotta use your star
And boy you'll see
It's an illusion lying down in front of here.
And there you are
Making it up but you're sure that it is a star
And boy you'll see
It's an illusion shining down in front of me.
The Story: I heard the song at a gig in France and couldn't help wondering about these lines. I always thought guys used something other than a star when they bed us girls. And hey, I'm not 'just an illusion'! Great song, though, the extended live take on 'Yessongs' is a wonder. - Submitted by: Monica
In and around the lake,
Martians come out of the sky and they stand there
In and around the lake,
mountains come out of the sky and they stand there
The Story: I was playing 'Songburst' with some friends, where another player sings the first few words to a lyric and have to sing the rest. My cue was 'in and around the lake,' and I sang confidently, 'Martians come out of the sky and they stand there!' Everyone busted out laughing. Hey, I thought the sci-fi like instrumental in it was about Martians landing on earth, it made sense to me... - Submitted by: Deborah Garbacik

Marmots come out of the sky and they stand there
Mountains come out of the sky and they stand there
The Story: My husband and I were hiking in the mountains and came across 2 marmots coming out of a rock fall. They came out, stood there and looked at us and then went back in. My husband remembered my problem with the lyrics (many years earlier) and said that maybe I had been right after all! - Submitted by: Kris Kuntz

Mullets come out of the sky and they stand there.
Mountains come out of the sky and just stand there
The Story: I never really paid attention to the other lyrics of the song, but I clearly remembered mullets - the fish. Just found out the real lyric today! A mind does crazy things because I was sure there was an album cover with fish hanging vertically. - Submitted by: Margery
Mummers come out of the sky and they stand there
In and around the lake,
Mountains come out of the sky and they stand there
The Story: figured it was some kind of enigmatic aliens who, having come here from space chose to 'just stand there' - Submitted by: john paul
One mile over we'll be there and missing you.
Then to summers we'll be there and laughing too.
Twenty four before my love you'll see.
I'll be there with you.
One mile over we'll be there and we'll see you.
Ten true summers we'll be there and laughing too.
Twenty four before my love you'll see.
I'll be there with you.
The Story: I've been waiting so long for posting this one. Several times ago, a radio announcer sing this song as "I'll be a roundabout". I think this is the longest coda ever in the world, but not, not longer than The Beatles' "Hey Jude", it ended with acoustic guitar for several seconds with Scottish folk music influence. About this song: While "Roundabout" is not longer for the longest coda ever in the world than The Beatles' "Hey Jude", but this song runs at 8 minutes and 35 seconds. While "Hey Jude" is 7 minutes and 21 seconds. The Jon Anderson and Steve James Howe-penned song was peaking at #13 on Billboard's Pop Chart. Make them the most successful progressive rock single of all time and their experiment hit before "Owner of a Lonely Heart" was more successful for them with topping on this chart. Its lyrics are about their love in a roundabout. - Submitted by: Wisnu Aji
Twenty-four before my love: Lucy, I'll be there with you!
Twenty-four before my love you'll see
I'll be there with you
The Story: Always thought it was a reference to Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (LSD) until I checked the lyrics haha. - Submitted by: Sorengama
Kill the moon, don't kill the marchers

The Story: The misheard lyrics don't make much sense, but then neither do the real ones. - Submitted by: Jeffrey Kasten
Yes',
"Yours Is No Disgrace"
... armies scatter the earth.
... armies gather near.
The Story: This is a legitimate correction - the words to this line are very clearly "armies gather near," as can be heard in the original and in every live version of the song that has ever been recorded (which are many). But this case appears to be one of misprinted lyrics; apparently the words were mis-heard by whoever was hired to transcribe and publish the lyrics back when the album had first come out. The reason we can guess the lyrics were originally printed this way, in some official version, is that in 2012 both SoundHound and GraceNote said they had no interest in this correction - they are going by what is in their database. The reason we can guess this was a hired-out job, after the fact, is that the lyrics were not printed on the original album cover. - Submitted by: Greg Clinton
