(Antia to Rosalia when Rosalia waxes ad nauseum about their home country of Puerto Rico): Puerto Rico ... You ugly island Island of tropic diseases, Always the hurricane blowing Always the population growing ... And the money owing, And the babies crying, And the bullets flying, I like the island Manhattan. Smoke on your pipe and put that in!
(Chorus): I like to be in America! O.K. by me in America! Ev'rything free in America For a small fee in America!
(Rosalia): I like the city of San Juan.
(An annoyed Anita): I know a boat you can get on.
Leonard Bernstein and up and coming lyricist Steven Sondheim's 1957 classic "West Side Story" had many songs that are still very special and remembered fondly to this day. And "West Side Story" a then modern day retelling of Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet" set in then modern day, Manhattan with the then recently immigrated Puerto Ricans and the longer term Italian gangs taking the place of the feuding families is still on stages in many places across the U.S. and the world. The song "America" has shoutouts to several places, including "America", Puerto Rico, the city of San Juan in Puerto Rico and the island of Manhattan (and probably one of the most popular for tourist to visit) one of the five burroughs that make up New York City. The lyrics posted here, by me, are probably the best in the song.
