Government officials are so accustomed to lying that they will do so even when it would be to their advantage to tell the truth. So, when they tell the truth, nobody believes them. I really thought it was sad when liar and con-man James Earl Ray convinced Dr King's family that he was not the assassin. Do I believe Lyndon Johnson and J. Edgar Hoover were evil enough to want King dead? Yes. Competent to pull it off and not get caught, no way.
