The Lyrics

just reposting this cos I had the name wrong on first post .. didn't appreciate case sensitivity ...
I'd like to say a thing or two about what they call celebrity
I've been hooked since kindergarden I was a full on total wannabe
But now I've got it I found out it ain't what it's cracked up to be
It gets so bad sometimes that I just long for anonymity
It isn't really fame I've got it feels like notoriety
I get tired of all the hangers on ..the envy and the jealousy
It isn't me they love it's just the buzz and the publicity
I won't know who my real friends are till my career is history
And it sure is hard to cope when you're surrounded by temptation
When they're telling you how great you are how you're a real sensation
And you can always find a pusher sellin dope and degradation
Who will lead you down the path to hell addiction and damnation

I'm sorry Mama
I did it just to please you
I never meant to make you cry
It really wasn't worth it

Repeat chorus

It isn't just the drugs you get addicted to you see
It's the adrenaline, applause the ego trips and flattery
My diary's always stuffed with party invites from PRs
Making up the guest list with all the other stars
But they often leave you with an empty feelin when they're through
And you're headin off alone with such sore feet from those high heeled shoes
You can't afford to take a lover you're afraid he'll kiss and tell
Could be just a sleazy journo who wants a story he can sell
You end up checkin into rehab for some detoxification
All that fame and fortune can be so debilitating
All night partying with sycophants is rather dehydrating
You get tired of wakin every day feelin sick with a head that's achin
Now I'm on the Atkins diet and I'm off the medication
I'm longin for sobriety ... and intellectual stimulation
I've booked in for a spot of transcendental meditation
Followed by a mud bath and colonic irrigation

I'm sorry Mama
I did it just to please you
I never meant to make you cry
It really wasn't worth it

Then those scary letters turned up from the IRS
They say I haven't paid my taxes and my affairs are in a mess
My accountant's done a runner ...left me no forwarding address
So who is left for me to sue to try to find redress?
But before he left he cleaned me out ...my account now stands at zero
While he is headin off to some cool beach house down in Rio
He's left me high and dry.. they've even repossessed my limo
I guess it's all just hopeless ..I ain't holdin out for no hero
So what I'd like to say to all you wannabe's out there
If its fame and fortune that you're after ...just beware
The music business can be so destructive ...now you take care
You really need a lawyer to look after your affairs
But if you keep your wits about you ...boy will you have fun
If you've got the talent and the looks you know you can be number one
And if you take the long view -plan ahead- get an offshore fund
You'll wind up sitting pretty with your millions in the sun

I'm sorry Mama
I did it just to please you
I never meant to make you cry
It really wasn't worth it

This is the song Eminem will probably be singing soon enough....

SOTM Good one!

(SOTM) Well done! From my experience, Eminem parodies that don't have the correct pacing usually have their rhyming and content matter also up *a certain creek* without *a certain implement*, but yours certainly wasn't one of them. I must commend your daughter's actions, however, as it is utterly cringeworthy when my mother attempts Eminem imitations, complete with movements. *shudders*

SOTM - My respect to you for actually doing a rap parody - something I can't quite get the hang of.

the thing I don't really get about rap is that there are all these great singers with great voices and they hardly use them to sing its really strange....... if I had half the vocal talent that these guys have .... I would use it..... I really don't get it....

I guess I must have already voted for this one, seeing as the vote didn't take... very clever and sharp as always, Martha :-)

As a musician, one of the things you make fun of is the drum solo. (What do you call someone that hangs around with musicians? A drummer!) The other thing we make fun of is poetry readings. (Maybe if they put a tune to that, it might be something) Wehn you put the two together, you get rap music, which seems to be proof that the sum is greater than the parts. Steve Allen used to get big laughs in the sixties by cold reading rock lyrics, and letting the idiocy speak for itself. Maybe the thing to do here is write cool melodies for rap lyrics, sing them, and see if hilarity ensues.

SOTM--I listen to Eminem...I do...but for some reason, I can NEVER keep them in my head for parody judging...hmph. I think it's the rap aspect. Anyway...this was a nice read, Martha...=)

I know EXACTLY how your protagonist feels. The all-night partying with sycophants is starting to dehydrate me too. Great great work, Ms. DTox. The rhyming is wonderful throughout (particularly in the first verse).

It's cool that you tackled a genre of music you don't seem to like very much (is that the case?) Variety is the spice of life. Good job with the pointed satire underlying it. 555

(SOTM) Rick D: I think you're on to something, 20 years from now when we'll be getting all new and really musically worked over covers of today's greatest rap hits we might get some really, really interesting stuff, and I'm not saying that from the wievpoint of someone who dislikes rap, cos I don't, there's a couple of rap albums in my album collection, including the one that holds this song.

Excellent, and oh so true (the off the medication part anyway). The rest rings true though. Very good.

Like JD said, heavy, but interesting. Love the way you worked your name in, a nice subliminal bit: "You end up checkin into rehab for some detoxification" ;-)

(SOTM) Had a lot of trouble with the pacing, but I think the words were excellent and very clever. This could stand as a great rap song on it's own, without even seeing it as a parody.

Thanks for the comments btw MarthaDTox was the name of a character in one of my reviews about the dot com bubble .. the character was a spoof of a high profile dotcom entrepreneur in the UK who ran a website called lastminute.com... her name was Martha Lane Fox..... (her songs were "dot com blues " "careless banker.. and the amercian pie parody...

One more song...
"I said I'm sorry Doctor
Dre never meant to let me
Go all this way but Black-cent works
Yeah that's right, I'm showin' mastering my black-cent"
