"Prove Yourself"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

DKTOS? Song here.
[soft piano intro]

[beat starts]

"Look
If you have
One shot
Just one opportunity
To prove everything you ever needed.
Jump on it.
Can he rap to this?
Or will he friggitup?"

NO!

This song is heavy
Three weeks; all is ready
He's haulin' through this better than steady
Jaw is revvin'
His purpose? - a warnin' service: this book's psalm is deadly
Dude walks soft - with a real long machete!
Stuff he's mown down
The whole ground's grown so brown
Head's up 'n the clouds
But they burst, yo, look out!
Free fallin', wow!
Everybody's callin' how
His talk's done now
Mimes suck! - off this clown!

Whacked back to normality, oh
The to-tality - grows
His lone fantasy's - blown
The whole galaxy - knows
His own fallacies - shown
An old, calloused e-go
At home, talent-free bloke
There's no malice he shows
His dome malady slows
Go ask Alice? She's stoned!
As his jokes crack and fizz; old, stale Coke
That's when he - scratched through the pad again, so
it's no Rhapsody-
-better go after this chorus and hope it don't sound thin

(You gotta) Prove yourself with the music,
A mood switch, a new mix!
Get better, never let it blow (no!)
You only need one shot, don't stop when all lights are go
Rock with impunity, have fun in your lifetime! (yo!)

(You gotta) Prove yourself with the music,
A smooth twist, the muse clicks
You better always let it flow! (flow!)
You only need one shot, don't stop, see all lights are go
Mock with immunity, make puns in your lifetime (yo!)
You better...

His prose is airing,
And he knows that it's daring
He speaks his mind without swearing
Scary thing!
So he grooves t'ward a
New word order
A formal write is boredom
Sees poop 'n' fart puns
Gross, leaves most yawnin'
And so he wrote harder
Slowly grows firmer
Seed flows, it's all over!
He notes it's all "honor!"
Goes to poke holes - he doles Paula Cole slaw-ter!
Thunder Rolls? Argh! country blows, it's so awful!
Disco? He don't bother!
He goes on and always shows them no quarter
Won't row the boat though he knows he's no mortal
He'll blow up on 'em some mo', there's no pardon
As he moves on to the weed-Rolling Stones-
-they're so old they need coffins!
No, I won't soften,
I'm bold, but not cold, I suppose I've grown hotter
Now the beat down's on, cuz-My-Humps-is-junk,-honest!

(You gotta) Prove yourself with the music,
A mood switch, a new mix!
Get better, never let it blow (no!)
You only need one shot, don't stop when all lights are go
Rock with impunity, have fun in your lifetime (yo!)

(You gotta) Prove yourself with the music,
A smooth twist, the muse clicks,
You better always let it flow (flow!)
You only need one shot, don't stop, see all lights are go
Mock with immunity, make puns in your lifetime (yo!)
You better...

Show more brains? - I'm insane!, and crude not tame
Pranked that Santa Closet's Lisp-mas: locked Rudolph's cage!
I was safer in the beginning; this pool hall's changed
I've improved now, and grown up, with cue balls, great!
Still I kept tryin' then went ridin' 'n' climbed higher
Dont believe? I'm net-free, walkin' the high wire
All for games, but I can provide fire
Tact? that, I don't have; I might fry lighter
Live, but I can't decide when I'll 'tire
Strive for mind willing cuz man I can't stand new bands, they're quite dire
Then it's all newbies, there is no prize fighter
Ripe for satire!
(but) these times have grown hard, and I bet it's semen harder!
Try ta breed originality, some fleeting offer
Caught up in streams; eaten by hungry schools of lean piranha
Awful authors often go ta awesome, but some won't even bother;
Layin' in slop.
Another play of Monopoly has brought my piece-
-on the point, I buy the Park Place, Boardwalk,
but other days I'm caught
Poor, I cannot blackmail this cop!
KY is my only other yucky option! - bailed! (thanks, mom!)
Through the forest, but this trail has gotten cold
I cannot grow old as failed, forgot
Don't fear I'll blow with a *pop*
Prevail!, no flop
Here I'm comin' 'round this mountain headed over the top!

(You gotta) Prove yourself with the music,
A mood switch, a new mix!
Get better, never let it blow (no!)
You only need one shot, don't stop when all lights are go
Rock with impunity, have fun in your lifetime (yo)

(You gotta) Prove yourself with the music,
A smooth twist, the muse clicks,
You better always let it flow (flow!)
You only need one shot, don't stop, see all lights are go
Mock with immunity, make puns in your lifetime (yo)
You better...

"You can spoof anything you set a rhyme (or 400!) to, man!"

Fascinating work, Red! Amazing, sophisticated poetry flowing here, it's like something Kool Keith or De La Soul could have dreamed up.

Holy freakin moly! How long have you been working on this project? I've only had one read thru but I know the OS so well that it's already romped in for pacing - I don't have the time now (2.30am - that's Melbourne-time!!! ;-) ) but I'll go thru it with the OS tomorrow - wonderful stuff Jack - 555

You must have the patience of Jobe...to parody a long, complicated rap song, like this....and extremely well done...I believe I'll stick to the basic patterned tunes...top 5's

Wow... Jack you really proved yourself in this parody, no pun intended or is there.... But seriously man one hell'va job here!!!

How long did it take you to write that? That was a #5 Ghetto blaster. By the way, don't you know about the "Do not Call List? Try googeling that and sign up. It will get the telemarketers off your back.

Really good job, Jack. although several times it sounded like the record was stuck...lol. Sure can tell about what kind of songs you don't like. 5's

just read it to the OS, which is one of my all-time faves - awesome syllable-matching and rhyming, Jack - didn't get all the references, but the immensity of the task made up for that - I loved the monopoly bit best (brilliantly stupid - my new fave compliment), but there were also TMGsyllable-subsTM :-)

Big thanks to Jack W., Agrimorfee, Stu, Alvin, AFW, Matthias, 2Eagle, Meriadoc and Pat:

Agrimorfee: I guess I'm a poet and just don't know it!

AFW: Patience, no. Determination, idea and drive, yes. After this I might stick to the basics as well, though I have two ideas for "Without Me" that won't get out of my head.

2Eagle: Less time than I had expected but that isn't saying much. I'll be Googleing that DNC list shorty. Thanks for the heads up.

Stu: I can't say exactly how much time I put into this, but I believe it exceeds the time I spent on my BOG, 4 M-G, Battle Hymn..., American Pie and The Boxer parodies all put together. I'd rather not give away all the nuances and what not in here, so I'll just say that, if you don't know, Paula Cole is a singer who hit it big here in the early 90s and Thunder Rolls is a famous Garth Brooks' song. If it's something else, please ask. There's also several subtle references to other songs in there.
Red Ant - October 28, 2006 - Report this comment
Stu: Make that 2 BOG parodies. Thanks for coming back to read this to the song, and for the custom acronym.
Peregrin - October 28, 2006 - Report this comment
That was excellent Jack. Like Stu, I really like the OS (maybe the only rap song I really like) and I have often thought about doing a parody but always stopped before starting. That's a crapload of hard work you have put in there, well done :)

Amazing, I'd never be able to make an Eminem parody (except for that parody I did for like toy soldiers), Good Job! Just like Rob Zombie would say in his Thunderkiss song: five five five five five five FIVE FIVE!

(SOTM) OMG! You parodised a rap... THAT is hard, I've only tried once, didn't get past the chorus (Wallace and Gromit presents Cheese Like That - parody of Eminem's @$$ Like That) And the best part of it was it was GREAT! 5-5-5
Red Ant - November 05, 2006 - Report this comment
Thanks Peregrin, ktelqueen, Joel, Luke, E.D.S and The Charnstar.

Peregrin: I like this one a lot too; it's probably my fave from Curtain Call. I even like "Thunder Rolls", though the overplayed-ness is why it got lampooned here.

ktelqueen: I promise to not say bad things about disco anymore. ;)

Joel: I'll give your parody a look-see in a bit. Thunderkiss '65 is a great song.

Luke: High praise there from the resident Eminem expert.

E.D.S: Borrowing a few words from TOS was inevitable here, but I'm glad you still liked it.

The Charnstar: You ought to give it another shot; that sounds like a good idea.

BTW, in case anyone was/is wondering, no rhyming dictionaries were used for this parody, though I did look up a few words for definitions.

A painstakingly difficult verbal jigsaw puzzle. Now that it's all assembled, I only have a vague notion of what the end scene is, but I'm guessing that's not the point. There are lots and lots and lots of lovely little pieces and you've fit them all together very nicely.
Tam - November 06, 2006 - Report this comment
Jack! You have completely captured this one. SOTM for sure! And listening to the OS... perfect timing, perfect everything. I am in AWE of your talent! 5's all around!

Wow is right...a pure, rollicking tour-de-farce through a parody author's mind towards "A new word order" ....no one has mentioned the double entendre of "Mimes suck!-off this clown!", which had me LMFAO, as did the 'semen harder' line. "Eaten by hungry pools of lean piranha"...poetry in motion, man. 5's don't seem enough for a work of this magnitude, but when it's as high as we can go, 555 it is, and then some. The effort this took is worth more than that, even without the magnificent content. Bravo, Ant. Spectacular stuff.

Pure brilliance, Jack! Cole slaw-ter is a great pun. Got a kick out of the weed-Rolling Stones too. As I've said many times before, your work just keeps getting better and better. This must have been tough to do but, the natural flow of the parody lyric makes it sound like you had no problem with it. Keep going, my friend, keep going.

SOTM - One helluva job here but it's not one hundred percent clear to me what the purpose whas, is there a back story from the discussion forums with you promising to prove you could do great with a long rap song or something like that? If so you did, though that's kinda the point in the original lyrics too I guess, hence my confusion on the whole matter. Anyway, you're never lost on proving yourself, whatever the reason here it's just me who's confuzzled it seems. :-)

(SOTM) hmm, this has been causing me great consternation Jack. as I said above I'm in total awe of the effort and crafstmanship involved here - mind-blowing in fact - but spaff put it best when he said there are "lots and lost of lovely pieces", because that's it - the whole is not quite equal to the sum of the brilliant parts - ie. the overall effect doesn't do it for me, and there are about half a dozen other parodies of yours (that honour more accessible and funnier ideas) that I will remember long after this one has faded from my mind because of that - and that's hard for me to write because clearly you had great ambitions for this, and the beautiful crafsmanship testifies to that - incredible effort

SOTM - My God... so this is what you've done with your life. That's not a parody, that's a freaking EPIC. I didn't have a clue what was going on most of the time, but I must give you kudos for tackling a rap song. They tend to have tons of lyrics and nasty rhyme schemes ... but damn if you didn't DO IT! You're nuts. But then again, I seem to remember a certain haberdasher of dubious sanity once remarking, "We're all mad here." How right he was.

This is a great song for the Parodist's theme. I can't believe you pulled this off, this looks really, really, really tough. I think I might have half-assed this OS in the past, but with the mad rhyming you did you surely did not half-ass this song, and you really did prove yourself. Congrats Red Ant.

(ABC4) ah yes, I remember this one! More awesome than funny, but it's incredibly awesome - having done an eminem myself now, I know how painstaking the process is - I still agree with myself above about preferring other parodies of yours that might not have been so brilliant but were funnier (eg. the Darwin Awards one), but this looks like the ABC 5-pointer from me...whoops, I shouldn't ever say that until I read kristof's ;-)

(ABC) Dang, I wasn't in when this was in the SOTM, it is hilarious, but I have to ask something. . .this one has to be a pain to record with all those tongue twisters.

This is the first time I've ever spent some time with this one. It's a colossal effort.
"All for games, but I can provide fire" sums it up for me.
Red Ant - September 01, 2008 - Report this comment
Thanks Guy, Matt, Aggy, TCOP, Stu, Dave and IB. Dave: The only backing track I have skips the piano intro, which throws off my timing a bit. The spoken intro is also hard - more difficult than the hardest tongue twister line, which is "Awful authors often go ta awesome..."
