"I Am A Pan Of Off-Slant Bread Dough"

Parody Written by:

Adagio

The Lyrics

This is a story of neglected bread, waiting to be baked. The song is from the movie "O Brother, Where Art Thou", and in the movie, the song was sung by the Soggy Bottom Boys.
I am a pan of off-slant bread dough,
I've been double all the day.
I bid air cells to roll amucky,
The pan where I was warmed and raised.

(Chorus) The pan where he was warmed and raised.

For six long beers I've been in bubbles,
No measures here unearth me browned.
You're remiss, I'm browned, inedible.
Try lopping ends, that's hell right now.

(Chorus) Try lopping ends, that's hell right now.

It's where she felt my old breadmold,
Forever expect anew again.
For renowned and pride are for her breadmold,
Perhaps I'll sigh, bring on dis grain.

(Chorus) Perhaps I'll sigh bring on dis grain.

You can marry me, become the galley,
For twenty years do I stay.
If the bread burns, think of another,
While I am sleeping in my cave.

(Chorus) While he is sleeping in his cave.

Baby, yore hard drink times betray anger,
Disgrace you'll never see no more.
Despair is one more crises that's given.
Replete anew goods golden more.

(Chorus) Replete anew goods golden more.

Pretty good. Some pacing problems, here and there and you left out the first line of the song ("In constant sorrow all through his days.") Gave you 4,4,4. Ok, I have to ask. Why Norman Blake? He is the musician on the guitar instrumental version on the sdtk., but he didn't perform on the version you parodied and his instrumental track is not to the same arrangement as the Soggy Bottom Boys tracks (which are to a Carter Stanley arrangement, as I recall -- sidenote: prior to O Brother, the song was long considered the Stanley Brothers and, after Carter's death, Ralph Stanley's signature song) and, generically, the song is in the public domain -- Soggy Bottom Boys, Traditional or either Stanley wouldn't have surprised me, but Blake did. Doesn't affect the parody, of course, I just saw his name and went, "Huh? Wonder why she cited him."

Thanks, Melhi. I put Blake because I was aware that many artists had performed this song before Soggy Bottom Boys and I frankly saw his name come up more often than others...one was even Bob Dylan!! Right on the first line..:D

Nice parody - good rhyme - maybe a hint of pace problem but I don't know the song well enough to really detect it. I love the melody to this song and that movie was a hoot. I may go out and rent it again after seeing this..

Ahhhh... Ok. That makes sense. :) I've heard a lot of versions of it, (not nearly all) but I don't think I've heard a version (with vocals, I mean) from Blake, yet... I'll have to keep an eye (ear?) out for it.

Ok Yes, thanks for jogging my memory.

Wow, Pat, this one's great! My wife Mary and I recently saw Alison Krause & Union Station at a concert in Boston, and they performed "Man of Constant Sorrow" . . . this parody slowly morphs towards its end like the rising of a pan of constant head know. ;-D

Thanks, Johnny. :D (I think I need your dictionary again) lol

Must have cost a lot of bread to produce this song. Bad choice of words...must have cost a lot of dough.

Some clever rhyming to original, particularly "I bid air cells to roll amucky."

(ABCs) Bizarre. Tres tres bizarre. I dare ask what inspired you to write about a chunk of mouldy bread awaiting its baking time, but in retrospect I probably don't want to know. 4-4-5

(ABC) I am late coming to this one, as last night I got the Blake version and was left without words, so I got the Soggy Bottom Boys one this morning. Loved the 'roll amucky' for 'ole Kentucky and also 'warmed and raised'.

This is great. Almost the best example of sound-alike subs I've read in a full-fledged parody. I don't normally laugh out loud, but the first stanza got me. All this needs is some fine tuning and there won't be a doubt in my mind. Great work Adagio.
Adagio - June 27, 2004 - Report this comment
That is so sweet, 2nz! This is one that I considered doing over, because, like you said, it did need some fine tuning. But, thanks for the smile on my face!!
