The Lyrics
The FA-MAS is the French Army's standard assault rifle in bullpup configuration where the action is behind the trigger group as in the SA-80 or AUG. The FA-MAS is 5.56x45mm NATO standard and weighs 8 lbs empty. Fires 900 rpm cyclic but has selective fire for single round and 3-rd burst options. Comes with a integrated carry handle and side bipod legs. FELIN versions can fire splinter ammo and have extensive mods for the Future Soldier program. The French call the FA-MAS "Le Clarion"- "The Bugle!" Has been used in Lebanon, Chad, Bosnia, and ODS...

I recall that Century Arms may have imported a few of these in semi-automatic mode. Very rare. Don't think I ever saw one. As a left-hander (rifle, shotgun, baseball bat), I have little use for so-called "bullpup" rifles. Most French and British soldiers have never held or fired a rifle before bootcamp, so they have no preconceived notions and habits to correct.
I can fire "ambi", but do not really like bullpups. Their configurations make them look smaller, but no- the barrel extends backwards to the action, so with FA-MAS almost the same length as M-16A-2. I don't like my face closer to the flash suppressor and given German history, no bullpups were ever accepted. Nazi Germany had the Knorr-Bremse 8mm para-rifle which was rejected in favor of the FG-42 (side mount mag) and there were designs for SS bullpups... but nothing manufactured by May 1945. Postwar the auto shotgun HK CAWS was bullpup but again not accepted. The AUG is probably the best-known of the lot and a great performer, but again, not my preference with long arms. Would still want an AK-100 series or AN-94 if my life was at stake or engaging an enemy foreign or domestic. Am curious if the AKX will defeat the AN-94 in the future. Germany will move firearms tech forward with plasma rifles and caseless once again. France has explored polyslug throwers and splinter munitions. US wanted 6.5-6.8mm but now wants either a new 5.56mm or 7.62mm. Is using the FN SCAR for SFs and HK-416s in some cases...
I've seen the semi-auto FN SCAR. One heavy rifle. Would not want to lug that around very far. Around $3000 locally.
Patrick, the FNH SCAR Mk 16 is 7.7 lbs and Mk 17 is 8.4 lbs empty, so I'm assuming you are talking about the latter. Not really that much difference with other assault rifles, 8 lbs being avg... even for bullpups!!! The lightest bullpup is IMI Tavor 21 @ 7.5 lbs and heaviest is Chinese Type 95 @ 8.7 lbs which is heavier than the SCAR Mk 17!!! Despite more bullpups being accepted worldwide (Austria, UK, France, Israel, Singapore, RSA, Russia (SF), and China, plus exports... the world is still dominated by two calibers: 5.56mm AND 7.62mm (both, in all forms)! Btw, the Chinese bullpup fires 5.8x42mm rounds!
