The Lyrics

Now and then I think of younger days of summer
Humidity and heat so crappy you could die
That kind of day just don't appeal to me
Back in the '80s when I was a teen
I'd just want to sit by the air conditioner

But I was obligated to a certain kind of madness
Chore assignation gave me the bends, 'twas a legend
We had the longest yard, it did not make sense
Our Dad thought a big yard makes good friends
But goddammit, we had a crappy lawnmower!

So I always had to cut the grass
To folks with smaller yard space that won't mean hardly nothing
Believe me son it would chap my ass
The lawn stretched out from our front porch to the neighbor's stuff
A square footage of nearly Five O O!
I could check the city records and confirm that number
I guess I don't need to though
But that was the yardage that I used to mow

Yes, that was the big lawn that I used to mow
So nearly a prairie that I used to mow

It wasn't simple to cleave all those bales of grass and clover
But you must believe me, it was a huge war to be won
Monstrous weeds would grow every day
Crabgrass and nettles would spray
Thorn bushes, stinging bees, gopher holes
Vine tendrils that the blades got caught on
In that bad lawn that I used to mow

Some other things that pissed me off
My hayfever'd kick in and I couldn't stop sneezing
And Zyrtec was not yet a drug!
No good cleaners to get grass stains off
And the grass smell would attack my nose
And pull out electrical cords and plug and replug 'er
Sweat would drip in my eyes just so
Now live in an apartment with no grass to grow

Yeah buddy
(The lawn that)
I had to mow
Yeah buddy
(It was a tragic lawn to mow)
Yeah buddy
(I used to mow)
Yeah buddy...
(That I used to mow)
(I used to mow)
Not for me

Brought back some memories. Nothing like mowing a large backyard in blazing heat with a noisy, smoking lawnmower while mom yells, 'Watch out for rocks!" Sweat in the eyes, getting cut by protruding branches, flies, and dying of thirst. I hated our mower until we got one with a drive system so pushing it was reduced to just steering it. I wanted mom to get a good brand name, but she always went to Sears or Wards or ordered out of the catalogue!!! 555!

As a fellow lawnmower hater I can totally relate to this parody. This was always my least favorite job growing up and you nailed all the reasons why.

When you let it grow, it's like a jungle.

(Artistry) Fair amount of pacing issues here, but otherwise a fun parody that really got across the frustration. Though I've never had a lawn to mow, so sucks to be you lot! 55!

Max, growing up in the '70s here in N California, every Saturday was filled with the noise of every dang lawnmower in the neighborhood! Guys would compete. Who would start mowing at 7 am and then the watering would begin with the attached sprinklers! Great streams would flow in the gutters and kids would play at the storm drains! My dad and neighbors used to spend the day watering the street! Today, such gross misuse of water in a drought would be heavily fined. It was cool back then but disappeared by the late '80s. I don't mind landscaping duties except when the weather is in the 100s. Also, we aren't allowed to water much so all the yards are dead. A lot of people have replaced lawns with bark or stones here.

Mowing lawns is one of the few chores I actually enjoy! Just put in the headphones and go to work! A nice story told here, but the pacing was off in a few places (seems to be a recurring theme in this round), but still nicely done!

(Artistry) I think this song either must be very hard to pacing, or really hard to follow along with because everyone that did this song had a few issues with it. Apart from that, this was fun. I never had to mow our lawn growing up, we had our neighbors do it. My dad didn't like lawnmowers ( as a surgeon, he saw too many lawnmower accidents to trust them), but I can still relate to disliking manual labor jobs. They suck indeed. Good work!
