OK, the devil made me do it- parody of a parody X4! The Soviet SS-1 SCUD originated in the 1960s as a potential 100 kt armed atomic missile. Instead, a simple 2000 lb explosive warhead was substituted as in the German V-2 on which the SCUD was based. The Iraqis wanted more range than 180 mile max. so they modified the missle by lowering the warhead size, increasing fuel tankage, and rate of burn. This increased range to max. 400 miles but made the missile path unpredictable as the fuel tanks were quickly emptied. In ODS, Iraq tried to bring Israel into the conflict by launching 40 missiles against them in psychological terror attacks, the Israelis fearing chemical warheads. So Patriot missile batteries were brought in to hit a few missiles coming their way. The Saudis also received 46 of them for being on the US side. But the threat soon became a joke as the clumsy Al Hussein versions fell short and littered the desert floor. They were unreliable and no threat to US troops in any way. Their launchers were instant targets for loitering US fighters and strike aircraft like the A-10. The Iraqis had a longer range version named "Al Abbas" but this was static and not mobile. Another failed version.
