The Lyrics

In the ‘50s the USAF used the F-84F Thunderstreak and RF-84 Thunderflash as NATO multi-role aircraft against the Soviets. But by 1955 someone had the brilliant idea of using a turboprop engine (based on German WW2 tech) to achieve near supersonic speed of a jet but with the extended range, low fuel consumption, and lower landing area of a piston fighter. The new aircraft became the XF-84H which featured a modified stretched fuselage to accommodate the new engine (Allison XF-40-A-1, 5850 hp), a new T-tail, and a triangle aft of the cockpit to combat the torque of the engine. This loud noisemaker actually caused the ground crews to lose their hearing due to the high decibel engine that was the loudest US aircraft in history (second only to the turboprop Soviet Tupolev Bear which also used German tech for the engines!). So the two prototypes were dubbed “Thunderscreech” aircraft. They made 12 flights and 11 ended in emergency landings. The speed for this prop fighter was fastest at 520 mph but nowhere near supersonic (YES, a prop fighter CAN attain supersonic speed with a supersonic prop- German Voith-Schneider attempted a supersonic prop in WW2 and the Brits made a supersonic scimitar-blade prop as well postwar… but neither ever got used b/c they were not mated to a modified aerodynamic bullet-shaped aircraft). The Thunderscreech had poor performance with same range as the F-84F (1900 miles), ceiling at just above 40,000 ft, and the pilot had to withstand massive vibration from the engine (Duh!) Cancelled as impractical with no advantage over the F-84F.
F-84 Thunderstreak of AF
NATO jet to meet the Soviet threat
Decent range and speed, since Nineteen-fifty

By ‘55 there was another choice
Turboprop version that made lots of noise
Mods to fuselage, T-tail and mini-fin… odd

Made such a sound, ground crews threw-up (Hey!)
Thought their eardrums were ‘bout to bust, such was the noise
They heard that sound, like thunder gettin’ off the ground

Made such a sound, ground crews threw-up (Hey!)
That Allison turboprop
They heard it all, was such a howl

Decibels climbing higher and higher
Louder than a siren with that obscene engine
Listen to the Thunderscreech roar

Louder, Louder whining engine
The turboprop demon
Listen to the Thunderscreech roar

Oh-No-Oh-No-Oh-No
Oh-No-Oh-No-Oh-No
Oh-No-Oh-No-Oh-No
Ears bleeding as it soars

Finally, it climbs into the sky
Everyone wishing farewell- goodbye
They can‘t hear though, a severe sound blow

Made such a sound, ground crews threw-up (Hey!)
Thought their eardrums were ‘bout to bust, such was the noise
They heard that sound, like thunder gettin’ off the ground

Made such a sound, ground crews threw-up (Hey!)
That Allison turboprop
They heard it all, was such a howl

Decibels climbing higher and higher
Louder than a siren with that obscene engine
Listen to the Thunderscreech roar

Louder, Louder whining engine
The turboprop demon
Listen to the Thunderscreech roar

Oh-No-Oh-No-Oh-No
Oh-No-Oh-No-Oh-No
Oh-No-Oh-No-Oh-No
Ears bleeding as it soars

Oh-No-Oh-No-Oh-No
Oh-No-Oh-No-Oh-No (Thunderscreech roar)
Oh-No-Oh-No-Oh-No
Ears bleeding as it soars

Roar… ROar… ROAr… ROAR…ROAR!!!!!!!!!!

Decibels climbing higher and higher
Louder than a siren with that obscene engine
Listen to the Thunderscreech roar

Louder, Louder whining engine
The turboprop demon
Listen to the Thunderscreech roar

Oh-No-Oh-No-Oh-No
Oh-No-Oh-No-Oh-No (bad)
Oh-No-Oh-No-Oh-No
Ears bleeding as it soars

Oh-No-Oh-No-Oh-No
Oh-No-Oh-No-Oh-No (Thunderscreech roar)
Oh-No-Oh-No-Oh-No
Ears bleeding as it soars
