How the heck did I miss this one? Or was it pre-2011 and just recently commented on? Anyway, 555! For the record U-96 killed 27 ships for a total of 181,206 tons and damaged 4 ships at a total of 33,043 tons. Only errors in this were it was a type VIIC boat, not B, did 11 patrols and was decommissioned in Feb 1945. Was used as training boat until sunk March 1945 by US bombers in an attack on Wilhelmshaven. It was broken up postwar. Btw, the British don't deserve full credit on Enigma. It was a joint effort with the British taking over the French and Polish intelligence and early calculating machines prior to Colossus. The Germans also changed the number of rotors on the machine during the war which threw the Allies off until they could be cracked. So there were gaps in Intel. FYI
