Will there be a reader rebellion if J.K. Rowling "kills" Harry Potter? If so, will it have as much impact as the reader reaction to the 1893 "death" of another English fictional hero?

He's made me renowned; 'cause, here in London town, you adore him.

Crooks hate him, he hates crooks.
In all of my short stories and books,
There's no mercy for a crook who's tracked down by Sherlock.

Ev'ry month the Strand gives me another deadline to meet.
They love my detective who won't pipe down about crime on Baker Street.

But I despair of writing more about Dr. Watson's man,
So I will get the game afoot and terminate him when I can.

Killing off Sherlock,

He's made me renowned, but here in London town, I deplore him.

I made him, he bores me,
So I'll create James Moriarty.
At the Reichenbach Falls, he'll go downstream with Sherlock.

Clever idea John. As for Harry Potter, wish they'd a killed him off in the first 5 minutes of that first HP movie I got roped into watching... :-P

Jenkins, you astound me! Even Inspector Lestrade could see this is a ripping good parody. As for Harry Potter, you think he's going down in "Deathly Hallows"? All I can say to that is... No (kidding), Sherlock! He'll have to sacrifice himself to save everyone, or else there would be an eighth book, and Rowling... Ah, but as you pointed out, Conan Doyle also said it was over. But as the Yogi, Lawrence Peter Berra, taught us... Merry: You got roped into it? I'll bet Malcolm wishes HE was the one who did it.

Thanks for the comments. Having read only one of the HP books and seen only one of the movies, I will have to defer to MP's prediction on the fate of young Potter.

Arthur Conan Doyle published most of his 4 Sherlock Holmes novels and 56 short stories in the Strand magazine in serial form. After the death of Holmes in “The Final Solution” in 1893, 20,000 readers cancelled their subscriptions, men work black mourning bands, and the royal family was distraught. (Of course, today the royal family is always distraught, but that's another parody.) Ten years later, Doyle explained how Holmes survived the fall at Reichenbach Falls and began serializing “The Return of Sherlock Holmes.”
