The Lyrics

My first 'epic' parody. I'd have done "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," but, you know, I couldn't think of any ideas. This one is much harder to pace, anyway.
Oh, I listen to music
Change lines in my head
Sometimes I find inspiration
But now I can't find a shred
'Cause the news now isn't funny
And I start to lose hope
And deep inside my heart,
I can't think of a joke
Oh, mama, an idea could you please lend?
'Cause I'm stuck in AmIRight-ville fresh out of ideas again!

Well Shakespeare, he stole his stories
Never had one 'twas all his own
I can't come up with tunes;
I toy with words alone
And I would try to find lines
That rhyme with other things
But some songs, well, you just can't pace them
It's nonsense that they sing.
Oh, mama, I think I need to take ten
'Cause I'm stuck in AmIRight-ville fresh out of ideas again!

I've got no ideas now
I tap my pencil angrily
I've had about a dozen Cokes
And I really have to pee
And I thought "I'll bet there's a song there,
But then again it would come out so crude."
So I think better of it
And go to get some food
Oh, mama, bored into a state of zen
'Cause I'm stuck in AmIRight-ville fresh out of ideas again!

Need a snack to eat
And it will get my mind to work
So I make a sandwich and chips
And feel so overworked
So I sit in front of the TV
And watch some DVDs
Watch hours and hours of '24'
'Till it seems like '23'
Oh, mama, that doesn't make any sense
'Cause I'm stuck in AmIRight-ville fresh out of ideas again!

Now the Prez is an easy targert
And I hit it all the time
But that's a bad tactic
If you want to get some 5's
And me, I'm the "one guy"'s favorite
'Cause I'm a democrat
And he pounds me so viciously
As if he was Casey at the Bat
Oh, mama, should I care or just offend?
'Cause I'm stuck in AmIRight-ville fresh out of ideas again!

Now sometimes I think that I should
Just do all the Beatles' songs
Or pirates, but Rick and Paul would
Beat me like a gong
And I must take a backseat to Luke in
The Under-21 writers' soiree
From Emi I can't get
Even the time of day
Oh, mama, could I bribe myself a friend?
'Cause I'm stuck in AmIRight-ville fresh out of ideas again!

Now I enter 'Song of the Month'
Play with the big boys now
But Spaff, he proceeds to smite me
Or Cluade or Phil A - and how!
And I congratulate them
And accept defeat with grace
But I just want to finish higher
Than my usual 11th place
Oh, mama, there's no shame in number 10
'Cause I'm stuck in AmIRight-ville fresh out of ideas again!

When I get back to writing
After a few tylenol
The ideas are flowing better
If 'better' means 'not at all'
And I say "Aw come on now
There must be something that's not been done!"
And Higgins says "It's already been done by me!"
Now the crying's begun
Oh, mama, others' songs I'll just ammend
'Cause I'm stuck in AmIRight-ville fresh out of ideas again!

Now I've got the best idea
That I've had in all my life
Suffice to say it's real special
Full of humor it's rife
I run a search real cautiously
My sorrows begin anew
It is the best idea ever
And it has been done - by you!
Oh, mama, can this really be the end?
To be stuck in AmIRight-ville fresh out of ideas again!
If you're upset that I didn't mention you, you'l have to wait for my next epic, "I Suck," to the tune of "Desolation Row" (Yeah, I know, I still have to work out some kinks in the pacing).

*starts meter* So, where to now, Charlie? ;)
Great writing, well-structured and something we can all relate to. "Watch hours and hours of '24' till it seems like '23'... snorfle!

The best parody about writer's block I've ever read...and I've done a few myself! 555

(SOTM) and I'm DKTOS. If you do get an MP3 for this I'd love to re-read it. Looks like a heck of a lot of hard work doing this.

I've never written a parody about writer's block myself, I'd like to, but I just can't come up with any ideas for it...

Oh, and just for fun I'd like to mention that the worst case of writers block I've ever seen was my high school class schema (not sure what you call it in English but I hope that made sense). :-)
Charlie Decker - April 09, 2005 - Report this comment
Not a bit of sense, Peter, but thanks a lot for the comment. :-)

(SOTM) Lyrics about not being able to come up with lyrics - I just can't think of a comment for that...

(SOTM) I DKTOS, so I hummed it to the tune of "Subterranean Homesick Blues" (sort of) and that worked too! You pretty much kept it consistently funny and well-paced.

I love Bob Dylan (see my "B" entry) but still I DKTOS - but I'm definitely looking it up on LimeWire, because I can almost hear Dylan in your lyrics Charlie - great job

(SOTM) You're never in a writing slump if you can write about it.
Charlie Decker - April 22, 2005 - Report this comment
Maybe, Scathe, but what if nobody knows the song? Is it still a slump then?

You'll be happy to know that according to my numbers, you're currently locked in a heated three-way tie for ninth place. Sorry; had to mention that. Anyway, this would be way funnier if you wrote it in a pirate voice. Kidding. Very good.

DKTOSOTM but enjoyed the read nonetheless.

The last verse, particularly, is painfully true. As for your question in verse 5, the answer is just offend. And yes, the Prez is easy. (You mean Claude, right?) Nicely done, Sgt. Decker. And thanks for the shout-out.

By the way, Charlie, Hunter S. Thompson also parodied this song - sort of. The title of Chapter 11 of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" is "Aaawww, Mama, Can This Really Be the End?... Down and Out in Vegas, With Amphetamine Psychosis Again?"

I felt it was my duty to let you know that. We should all strive to have as much in common with Hunter S. Thompson as possible.

(EGO) good stuff Charlie - liked the "watched 24 'til it seemed like 23" bit - but, and boy am I stressing this point today, not coke! - scotch and coke! (or is that just me?)

(EGO) DKTOS, Charlie, but 5s for baring your parody writer's soul...good job

EGO-- It's good to work out those mind blocks with a parody about mind blocks. Great job on the whole parodist's anguish thing. By the way, I'm not upset on not being mentioned. I've seen quite a few songs on here that mention authors' names, but not me yet. Eventually I hope to get the cred for recognition. Good stuff, Charlie.
Arwen - August 28, 2005 - Report this comment
EGO--I'm really quite surprised at how many of the Ego Contest songs have been about writer's block...aren't we supposed to be convincing each other of how good we are at this stuff? ; ) Just kidding...I've got my share of writer's block parodies...and what I consider to be more than my share of writer's block...I feel your pain, Charlie...
Claude Prez - August 28, 2005 - Report this comment
Say, I remember this one; good stuff. Except this isn't very egocentric at all, is it? All true though.
