The Lyrics

In 2004 Kentucky's voters narrowly reelected a man, Jim Bunning, who was showing obvious signs of disorientation and senility. I thought I'd ponder why this happened with an update of a classic Dylan number. Though the penultimate verse is a little racy, I'd stress that my purpose isn't to belittle Bunning's condition, but to express my bafflement at his reelection.
Come gather, Kentuckians
Wherever you roam
And admit that the man
You've elected and known
Might be too far gone
For his seat on the throne
If your reputations
Are worth savin'
You might just consider
A little recall
Cause the times they are derangin'.

I'll say this for Bunning:
He stuck to his gun
Though he thought his opponent
Was Saddam Hussein's son
From unscripted debates
Bunning tended to run
Because he was mentally changin'
Any doctor could see
He's not fit for the job
But the times they are derangin'.

The line it is drawn
The ballot is cast
The slow one now
Won't ever be fast
And the President now
Leaves many aghast
Our standards are
Rapidly fadin'.
We don't know the difference
Amidst the bombast
For the times they are derangin'.

Mongiardo came close
He quite nearly won
The problem was Bunning
Did get 51
Sent back to the District
And won't this be fun?
Although he is
Rapidly agin'.
Why didn't they notice
His faculties gone?
It's the times, they are derangin'.

Oh incontinent senator
Please heed this call
Don't piss on the Rostrum
Don't poop in the Mall
But I guess if you do
We shan't notice at all
There's a war outside
And it is ragin'.
It's shakin' our windows
And shapin' our laws
For the times they are derangin'.

Come gather, Kentuckians
Wherever you roam
And admit that the man
You've elected and known
Might be too far gone
For his seat on the throne
If your reputations
Are worth savin'
And you might just consider
A little recall
Cause the times they are derangin'.

A politician with no mind will probably do less harm than one with a mind!

Must admit, I started off thinking this was about your president ;-) Some lovely lines, and even if I don't know the politico in question, it's very enjoyable

Some very good lines. 5s

Because he was "promoted" from the House to the Senate in 1998, Jim Bunning is the only man who both voted for Bill Clinton's impeachment and for his conviction. As opposed to New York's Chuck Schumer, the only one to vote against both. But Bunning pitched six seasons in Philadelphia, and that'll warp anyone's mind. He also once pitched a perfect game, but it shouldn't count. It was, after all, against the Mets.

It's a shame for a great pitcher to wind up in this situation, but Bunning (or some part of him) seems to have made this choice. I'm currently pondering how best to balladize Oklahoma's new senator, Tom Coburn, who is, in a number of ways, scarier than Bunning. Thanks to all for your feedback!

Hey, Phil....I live in KY. and don't even know the politico in question! (But if he's the oppossite of Chuck Shumer...whom I do know, being a former NYer, I like him already!)

"To everything, Tom Coburn, there is a season, Tom Coburn, and a time to every purpose in the Senate..." Maybe you could start with that?

Heyya Michael - Not a bad idea. Quite literally, I will sleep on it.

This was very good. But after electing Ronald Reagan twice, we you really that baffled by Bunning's reelection? And Michael as a Met fan, I agree - Bunning's perfection against the Mets has to take a backseat to Doc Ellis' no hitter on acid against the Padres.

Now, now. I was *way* too young to vote for the Gipper on either occasion. More seriously, I've seen debate footage from Ronnie's second debate in 1984. He did do poorly in the first debate, but seemed really on the ball for the second. Bunning, on the other hand, insisted on being in another room and was apparently reading his lines. Whatever Reagan's ailment was, up through 84, he was capable of surmounting it on occasion.

A little epilogue: Time Magazine has named Bunning as one of the Five Worst Senators. Way to go, Jim. I knew you could do it.
