The Lyrics

Lyndon Baines Johnson was the president
He heard that more troops need to be sent
Thinking it was a sure bet
That we would win the Vietnam War yet
General Westmoreland appealed to the head of state
The turning point of the war was on this date
January 1968

Denny McClain he won thirty ball games
While the city of Detroit had gone up in flames
The New York Jets would put on a show
Starring a man they called Broadway Joe
Some new Olympic symbols could not wait
Black power fists pointed at the gate
Mexico City in 1968.

Well Mayor Daley said to the police
All Democratic protests should cease
'cause we have a convention in town
I don't want the country to think I'm a clown
The crowd in Grant Park had gathered at a massive rate
That night the cops used unadulterated hate
The whole world was watching in 1968.

Now the third son of the Kennedy clan
Had a big presidential plan
He won California, but lost his life
And another assassination would re-ignite racial strife
Memphis was the city Tennessee was the State
With Jesse Jackson watching, Martin met his fate
While he had a dream in 1968.

Dion sang Abraham, Martin, and John
Because America's innocence was gone
The public psyche suffered a big contusion
As the American Dream was shown to be an illusion
Something happened that cannot be considered great
Richard Nixon became the head of state
To end the year 1968.

Good one Tim. Fellow '60s Man here. All I can say is let's make sure 2004 isn't a repeat of '68....i.e. let's get OUR Nixon out of power.

Tim Hall - Fine job 5-5-5, reminds me of the "Time Machine" (I can't remember exactly what they called them) collages that the Smothers Brothers show used to occasionally feature (with Mason Williams' great instrumental "Classical Gas" backing the pictures).
