The Lyrics

This mess in Abu Ghraib is hard on an old soldier - and everybody else. I think the truth - one way or the other - is getting lost in the spin from both sides. What a mess.
There's something happening here
What it is, is regrettably clear
There's abuse that we've found over there
And it's laid our darker side bare.

I think it's time we stop, children, what's that smell?
Credibility is shot to hell.

There's battle lines being drawn
Neither the right nor left's completely wrong
But still we're losing our minds
Leaving all sense of reason far behind.

I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that smell?
Civilized debate is shot to hell.

What a field-day for the press.
They'll make big money from this mess.
Printing pics and lurid headlines.
Mostly say, "To hell with our side."

It's time we stop, hey, what's that smell?
Objectivity is shot to hell.

Paranoia makes sense.
It's our first line of defense.
Look close at what our leaders say
Or we may find the nukes come and blow us away.

We better stop, hey, what's that smell?
Credibility is shot to hell.
Stop, hey, what's that smell?
Civilized debate is shot to hell.
Stop, hey, what's that smell?
Objectivity is shot to hell.
Stop, hey, what's that smell?
Everything we are is shot to hell.

Not funny, but incredably true.....great job Stray Pooch....there are people I know that are in the ROTC and are ssaying that this is nothing new with war, and the troops are not in trouble for what they did, but rather for being stupid enough to take pics of it....what do you think?

It is true that such atrocities always happen in war - My Lai was far worse. But, except for the fact that the pics provided evidence that might otherwise have been unobtainable, they are not the cause of the prosecution. Every soldier learns from basic training (and it is reinforced in NCO training and in annual mandatory training for all soldiers) that you are never allowed to abuse POWs and that you are required to disobey lawful orders. SSG Frederick (among others) is a disgrace as an NCO not only for his heinous acts, but for trying to pass it off as a "lack of training." NCO's ARE the trainers! If memory serves, formal GENCON training requires an officer to administer it but any E-6 worth his stripes would know AND TRAIN HIS SOLDIERS TO KNOW the rules of POW treatment. Every unit Mission Training Plan has that as a basic collective task. In an MP unit, that would be mission essential. I won't turn this into a debate club, so if anyone wishes to discuss the issue, please feel free to join the debate at www.debategate.com/3DHS/ (the Three Dead Horses Saloon). In the meantime, thanks for the comments, Billy. As you might guess, this is a very emotional subject for a retired soldier.

Thunderous Silence,Jumbo Shrimp,Military Intelligence ;these are a few of my favorite oxymorons. I'm sorry ,but that Lynndie looks like Max Casella during his "Doogie Howser" days! I'm sure that only by holding a prisoner at gun point while backed by the U.S.army, is the only way she could get some attention from any decent guy!

Pooch: Keep on doggin' 'em. We hereby unleash you (oh boy, triple entendre)! Thought Police: Lynndie's taller. When is William Tong gonna go "England Swings" (to the Roger Miller song)?
