The Lyrics

In my view, the most interesting new character introduced to the Peter Jackson world of Tolkien is the wizard Radagast the Brown, or Aiwendil as he is known to the elves. It's great to see him fully realized in The Hobbit, beautifully played by Sylvester McCoy. He's the perfect linking character to tie in the darker forces that lie just beyond the scope of the book. His cinematic role is slightly different to Tolkien's version but positively so.

The other main new character, the goblin warrior Azog, is more problematic, I think, as his part in the tale has been changed a lot, but I won't go into that. So here's a homage to Radagast and the kevar and olvar (flora and fauna) that are his Middle Earth domain.

RADAGAST

It's true! His brew! The Brown One made us cheer!
This movie we've been waiting all the year.

The Valar sent so many moons ago here
Radagast the Brown, it was his lot,
First of the regal Istari to know fear
Of what he got
A Morgul blade deep hidden by the members
Of the noble wise White Council. It cannot
Exist in Middle Earth. Elrond remembers
Sealed deep to rot

It cannot! It cannot!
This news dumbfounds the great Istar'
Look what Raddy got! He's gone to pot!
That's how magicians are!
In creepy Dol Goldur a strange cold sundown
As fate, the Angmar witch king, makes it clear
His master's growing hot. This solitary spot
For slowly-ever-festering so near
In damn earshot

Radagast! Radagast!
His name may give mere mortal pause
But in Radagast, Radagast
Are all of nature's laws:
The forest that grows lush upon the hillside
And every creature in it that appears
With Sauron's choking knot, the life-force starts to clot
We need some powerful conjuring right here
What have you got?

Saruman, he will scoff, and play the threat down
Already been consulting Palantir?
But trust him not one jot
Rad is no mushroom sot
He's busily ever aftering the queer
He knows what's what.

Evil stirs in Mirkwood, out of tune here
The animals and plants are in the cot
But Rad's powers have their limit. Where's Mithrandir?
We're in a spot!

Radagast. Rad aghast!
Rally Beorn to the cause.
Radagast. Such a blast
When his rabbits hit their paws
His sled goes mad mad rush upon the hillside
Burn off warg and goblin, dwarves all clear
In short he's simply fast
His ass is lightning-grassed
Those orkies ever shaftering, that's dear
Old Radgast.

Very good switch to the old original

As we used to say back in the 60's, you really "did this up brown!"

I just saw the Hobbit not too days ago, and it took me all day to recognize what your song title was about. Oh, and others do agree with your opinion about Agog

Thanks for v/c to AFW, Old Man Ribber, Lennie. I thought a few more Tolkien fans might dig this - guess they're all on vacation. And it's a pretty corny old OS.

Nicely done indeed, Lifeliver - and the OS is perfect when you consider that Sylvester McCoy is playing Radagast in the Peter Jackson movie. There are some great subs in here, and some cracking lines (I particularly like "His ass is lightning-grassed" for example.) And perfectly paced, as always. I'm sorry I missed this over the holidays, but Christmas was a bit weird for me because my father-in-law was in hospital. Anyway, thanks for the heads-up - I thoroughly enjoyed this. 555

Thanks Wendy - so glad you enjoyed it and thanks for taking the time. Actually I tell a lie - I'm not the only one. Callmelennie just did the Gollum riddle scene, and a couple of months back someone did a reworking of 'Far over the Misty Mountains cold' but I can't seem to track down who it was. I'm sure there'll be more. Cheers, and I hope your father-in-law is doing OK.
