The Lyrics

You know me, I'm a city guy. Growing up in the suburbs made me that way. And farmland? Not for me, except when I need the occasional parody inspiration. So I turn to Darlene Love's version from "A Christmas Gift For You From Philles Records" (a.k.a. "The Phil Spector Christmas Album" -- which, itself, now sounds like the title of a parody after all he's done), and...
Sleigh to drive, would be better.
Engine's dry, it's not wetter.
My car is not right.
Ain't moving tonight.
I'm walking in the hinter of the land.

Gone away is transmission.
Car is in bad condition.
I called a tow-truck.
In snow it is stuck.
So I'm walking in the hinter of the land.

In the meadow, I can build a snowman
and pretend he is Mister Goodwrench.
Can he fix my car up right? Oh, no, man.
The car is leaking, and, hey, what's that stench?

Later on, I'm arriving
in the town toward which was driving.
Guy says, "Sho nuff, I can fix your stuff."
Drives me back through hinter of the land.

(instrumental break)

In the meadow, find my broken Jetta.
Guy who sold it to me was a clown.
After New Year, I'll get something better.
But first I'll have to get out of this town.

So everyone, here's the lesson:
Way out there, don't be messin'.
Just stay in New York.
And don't be a dork
walking in the hinter of the land.
(Oh whoa whoa!)
Walking in the hinter of the land.
(Oh whoa whoa!)
Walking in the hinter of the land.
(Oh whoa whoa!)
(repeat 'til fade)

When you drive a 1986 vintage car like I do, the picture you paint looks quite familiar. Sends a chill right through me.

Wonderful job on your "Foggy Mountain Breakdown". If you break down in the country, there's good reason to be afraid if you suddenly hear banjo music! (Pray for "Deliverance"!) I guess I'm blessed...rural/suburban upbringing near a (somewhat) large city makes a person a universal driver. ;D

You know you're in the Scandinavian hinterlands when... [insert any old redneck joke here]... in the snow!
