The Lyrics

Shari Lewis, Bob Keeshan (Captain Kangaroo) and later Fred Rogers did for children what nobody seems to want to do anymore. These gentle souls made us feel loved and entertained us without computer graphics and action cartoons. At Bob's passing it is like a big part of my childhood is truly, officially lost. I think his epitaph should be the only words he ever spoke as Clarabelle the Clown (on the last episode of Howdy Doody) - "Goodbye, kids!"
Has anybody here seen my old friend Shari?
Can you tell me where she's gone?
She and Lamb Chop would visit
When I was so very young.
Like the song that never ends, she goes on . . .

Has anybody here seen my old friend Fred?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He used to be my neighbor,
In the days when I was young.
He just took a trolley and moved on . . .

Didn't you love the way they loved you?
Didn't they help us find the good
in you and me?
Their love was free.
All too soon, they had to move on.

Has anybody here seen the good old Captain ?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
I think I hear him jing'lin' those Treasure House keys
With Shari and Fred, Bob goes on . . .

Well done Stray.

I loved Shari. Nice tribute 555 ( I parodied "The Song That Never Ends", very hard to be the first one on anything here)

Ditto the comments. The Captain will surely be missed. I did read in the NY Times obits, that Bob had been sacked by Buffalo Bob sometime in the middle of Howdy Doody's run (for alleged organizing), and was replaced as Clarabelle. The Peanut Gallery's loss was everybody's gain - Captain Kangaroo was by far the superior show.

As a Baby Boomer born in '58, I remember them all. Very well done, SP - thank you for writing a tribute all us Baby Boomers can really relate to. 555

Guy, Rick, David, Johnny: Thanks folks. I wasn't aware that Bob had been replaced on HD. Guess that kinda spoils the epitaph, if not the sentiment. Shari Lewis was my all-time favorite, with the Captain right behind. I am not ashamed to say that I slept with a Lamb Chop stuffed toy until age five and I laughed every time the Captain got showered with ping-pong balls! I just realized last night that these three icons of children's TV were gone and the song came naturally.

That was touching. 5's.

Stray - Excellent - I remember when I got to the age where I thought Capt. Kangaroo was kinda lame and I was "too cool" for him anymore. Whatta jerk I was then, but teen-age years can be like that. Anyway he's cool to me now...wish there was someone on the Telly like that for kids today instead of all the violent/mean-spirited/nasty/ugly/cynical/product-placement inspired crap that passes for "children's television" now...

5's. chuck, please, change how funny to how creative, this is another example of a fine song that isn't meant to be funny

This song almost made me shed a tear just like the original song. Beautiful job, Stray Pooch and special thanks to Paul Robinson to referring me to this song,

Joelle, Paul, Sloatead, Tim: Thanks for the kind comments! I am glad I was able to touch a few of you like those three wonderful people touched me. I, too, was a boomer - a '57 model myself. It truly was a different time when we were kids. Sloatead, I appreciate the idea about noting creativity in lieu of humor. A lot of my parodies are intended to be more serious than funny - or at the least a humorous treatment of a serious subject. In fact, one of my songs is actually dead serious - "A Million Mogadishus" which I accidentally called "A Serious Song" because I got the fields confused. That one wasn't even a parody but an original composition. Still, most people who read and/or listened to it gave me fives across the board. For the most part, the "how funny" vote doubles as a "how creative" vote anyway. Thanks, folks!

Stray -- nice tribute and appropriate choice of original song. I'm a fellow Boomer ('53) who didn't see much of Mr. Rogers but always watched Captain Kangaroo. Shari Lewis and the Banana Man from the Captain's show were my absolute favorites. Just last night, Rick and I were talking to a couple who is disappointed that their kids don't have anything like that now, just animated figures.

Thanks, Mari.

As a British reader, I never saw Captain Kangaroo and only heard of Mister Rogers via Spock's Beard's resumes on the 'V' booklet (it was Neal Morse's favourite TV show alongside Veggie Tales). But I do remember Shari Lewis and Lambchop being on British TV. Children's TV can be so cynical now.
