The Lyrics

The refrain to this hit me like a brick on 9/11/01. I usually don't do serious song parodies. But in Oct. I did this one. My apologies for one glaring historical innacuracy.
A long-long month ago
I can still remember how good things used to feel...
Who knew that we'd had our way
And life was going to change that day
And a terror from across the sea'd be real...
But after August, hot and gritty
Came September, warm and pretty
Death came to our doorway
Evil found one more way
I don't remember whether I'd
Sat and screamed or stood and cried
When I learned some folks had turned the tide
The day that thousands died...
So,
(Chorus)
Bye-bye, on American Fly
We're slated to be fated
But we're still gonna try
Those terror plans
Ain't gonna fly
Singin' this'll be the way that we die
This'll be the way that we die...
Bingham, Beamer, Glick, Burnett
Got on the plane expecting that
They'd make a hop to San Francisco Bay
Do you believe that destiny
Was on board Flight 93
When it took off after forty minutes of delay
What none of them suspected then
Was evil was on board with them
Serpents in their midst
Waiting for their time to hiss
It was an early-morn cross-country flight
With a passenger load that was really light
But somehow something wasn't right
The day that thousands died
Someone was singin' (Repeat Chorus)
They heard cruising altitude begin
And most of them had settled in
To pass the time in ways they had
Then "God is great" somebody said
And just as quick a man fell dead
And they knew that their day had gone real bad...
Then over Cleveland on the ground
They felt the plane being turned around
Hijackers claimed a bomb
But somehow that felt wrong
Thirty-two thousand feet and they were stuck
Noplace to run, nowhere to duck
They knew they had to make their own luck
The day that thousands died.
They started singin' (Repeat Chorus)
Now up there they were on their own
So those who could got on the phone
And heard the news from N.Y.C.
When they learned of the attack
They knew there was no turning back
They were a missile aimed at Washington D.C.
They decided they would make their stand
With weapons that they had at hand
Said: "We know we're going to die
"Some of us are going to try."
'cause a fire extinguisher would work real good
A Flight Attendant said and she knew she could
Give terrorists what they deserved
The day that thousands died
She was singin' (Repeat Chorus)
Filled with thoughts of terror foiling
An attendant set some water boiling
To give some evil faces pain
Other hasty plans were laid
And other weapons quickly made
At other places on the plane.
But time, they knew, was running out
There was no room for fear or doubt
They prepared to fight
To stop that deadly flight
Todd Beamer prayed and said "Let's roll!"
What happened next, we'll never know
But they didn't hit the Capitol
The day that thousands died...
He was singin'
Bye-bye, on American fly
Now we're slated to be fated
So we're all gonna try
Those terror plans ain't gonna fly
Singin' this'll be the way that we die
This'll be the way that we die...
I know a girl who sings the blues
And she could use some happy news
But this is all that I can say
In D.C., beneath the gleaming dome
They sang of freedom and of home
And they spoke of airborne terror turned away
And in the sky and pointing groundward
Air Flight 93 swirled downward
Ground scarred and foresaken
But no more lives were taken
And the four guys I admire most
Helped stop the plane along the coast
And then they all gave up the ghost
The day hope didn't die...
Somewhere they're singin'
Bye-Bye, on American fly
We're slated to be fated
But we're still gonna try
Those terror plans
Ain't gonna fly
Singin' this'll be the way that we die
This'll be the way that we die...
They'll be singin'
Bye-bye, on American fly
We're slated to be fated
But we're still gonna try
Those terror plans
Just ain't gonna fly
Singin' this'll be the way that we die...
