The Lyrics

Despite decades of criticism by exiled Cubans and human rights activists, Cuba's dictator, Fidel Castro, has been praised by several Hollywood celebrities. Among them are Steven Spielberg, who stated that his visit with Castro had been the "eight most important hours" of his life, Kevin Costner, who attended a private screening of Thirteen Days with Castro and asked, "Who is to say that the United States is right and Cuba is wrong?" and Danny Glover and Harry Belafonte, who signed a petition in May of this year supporting Castro and suggesting that the United States is a threat to Cuba.
Spielberg's quite fond of Castro
And his dictatorship.
About Cubans in prison,
He does not give a rip!

Cuban are grievin' Steven
(Quite sadly)
Cuban are grievin' Steven
(Quite sadly)
Cuban are grievin' Steven

Costner starred in a movie
Depicting thirteen days.
Costner also loves Cuba
And its communist ways.

It's far from Heaven, Kevin
(Quite distant)
It's far from Heaven, Kevin
(Quite distant)
It's far from Heaven, Kevin

Glover and Belafonte
Endorse Castro's design.
They don't care that most Cubans
Want Fidel to resign.

Don't kiss his fanny, Danny
(Quite lethal)
Don't kiss his fanny, Danny
(Quite lethal)
Don't kiss his fanny, Danny

Born to suffer repression,
Civil liberties nil,
Cubans want our troops to come back
And re-conquer San Juan Hill.

Where's Rough and Ready Teddy?
(Quite Bull Moose)
Where's Rough and Ready Teddy?
(Quite Bull Moose)
Where's Rough and Ready Teddy?

Elections in Havana
Don't involve a lot of debate.
Dissidents in Havana
Realize that death or jail is their fate.

Cuban are grievin' Steven
(Quite sadly)
It's far from Heaven, Kevin
(Quite distant)
Don't kiss his fanny, Danny
Not all Hollywood celebrities are enamored with Castro. Cuban refugees Andy Garcia and Gloria Estefan have spoken out condemning the horrors of communism and the ignorance of Americans who support Castro.

John--Good for you. People don't usually risk their necks on flimsy homemade rafts when things are real great at home.
Phil Alexander - October 15, 2003 - Report this comment
...but who's to say what the economic circumstances would be like in Cuba without the US sanctions? (just playing devil's advocate: I don't really know enough about exactly what's going on there to comment) - but I did enjoy the parody.
Claude Prez - October 15, 2003 - Report this comment
Well done as usual John. Economic freedom makes it possible for these people to pull down millions playing make-believe and they have the arrogance to criticize it in favor of authoritarianism? Unbelievable. Royce--good point. Phil--Sanctions, schmanctions; a free country will prosper regardless because the incentives are there for individuals to succeed economically.

Excellent Mr. Jenkins!
John Jenkins - October 15, 2003 - Report this comment
Phil - Castro is the cause of the sanctions - if he implemented economic reforms to allow more freedom, the sanctions would be lifted. Cubans want freedom more than they want American goods; but, as Claude pointed out, if they get freedom, prosperity will follow.

Royce, Phil, Claude, and Horse - Thank you.

Claude - I would like to see you apply your wit and wisdom to more political parodies.
Phil Alexander - October 16, 2003 - Report this comment
So against how many other countries does the US have these sorts of sanctions in force?

" if they get freedom, prosperity will follow." - like it has in Russia?
John Jenkins - October 16, 2003 - Report this comment
Good point, Phil - Russia's recovery is a lot slower than those of the East European countries that began transforming from planned to market-based economies after the break up of the Soviet Union in 1991. Because of a bloated bureaucracy, corruption, and an obsolete infrastructure (much of which still exists), the economic performance was terrible until 1999. For the past 3 years, however, the GDP has been growing at about 6% per year and real disposable incomes have been increasing at about 9% per year.

The point of the parody, though, is that Cubans do not have political or economic freedom and that we would be better off paying attention to people like Andy Garcia and Gloria Estefan, who have connections to the people of Cuba, than to other Hollywood celebrities who have shared dinner and a cigar with Fidel Castro.

Great parody, JJ. Right on the mark. Trip 5's for not being PC and for a great write.

And Phil, If you'd care to check on the Soviets during the cold war they spent every ruble on their military in an effort to gain superiority over the US. It is no wonder it is taking them so long to get solvent. They ran their economy into the ground for their ideal of 'world peace through world domination'. So you can't really compare what is going on with the Russian economy to what may yet happen to the Cuban economy. As for now, there is no economy without freedom. There are lots of poor countries in the world that sanctions have nothing at all to do with in their circumstance. Cuba was not exactly rich before Castro came along.

And I am surprised that you claim to be the devil's advocate in your earlier comment. I thought atheists did not believe in the devil. :D
Phil Alexander - October 16, 2003 - Report this comment
OK, OK... I was talking kind of tongue in cheek - Russia's never not had economic problems. Though a Devil's Advocate is a phrase, which although it has a religious history (he's the one arguing why a proposed saint should not be sanctified) is not solely a religious phrase - for a start, it would probably be easier to be a literal advocate for the Devil if you didn't believe there was one. If you see what I mean. :-)

Phil, Phil, easy. The devil thing was just a joke. Note the cheesy emoticon I used after I said it.
Phil - October 17, 2003 - Report this comment
A joke? A JOKE?? What kind of person makes a joke about THE DEVIL???

;-)

The only votes are a 5 and a 0 and somehow it's averaged to a 3. Did you design this rating system, John Jenkins? Also, were you the person who gave it a 5? Either way, Libertarian cyber nerds aren't funny.
Manual Winnebago - February 08, 2005 - Report this comment
I'm not sure what's funnier about "Manuel Noriega"'s comment - his implication that John Jenkins is a "Libertarian cyber nerd" or his inability to count to 1.
John Jenkins - February 09, 2005 - Report this comment
Wow! No comments on this parody in over a year and then two provocative comments in one day. If Mr. Noriega is offended by my attempts to poke fun at Fidel Castro and his admirers, that would seem to be his problem. And while I agree with Mr. Winnebago's sentiments, I do like the designation of "Libertarian cyber nerd."
