The Lyrics

I'm rehearsing for a community theater production of Fiddler on the Roof, so look for more parodies like this from me!
Is this the gasoline I’m buying?
Are these the oil men I pay?
I don’t remember growing richer.
How did they?

What made this pump a one-armed bandit?
How did these prices get so steep?
Wasn’t it years ago
When they were cheap?

Price hike, price gouge,
Price hike, price gouge,
Swiftly numbers soar.
Decimals turn overnight to dollars.
I can’t say “Fill ‘er up!” no more.
Price hike, price gouge,
Price hike, price gouge,
Swiftly digits roll.
One price hike following another,
Leaving my pocketbook with holes.

Should I take public transportation?
Should I write letters to D.C.?
Should I buy stock in Exxon-Mobil
Or B.P.?

Should we ride bicycles to work now?
Should I trade in my S.U.V.?
Is there a hybrid car
In store for me?

Price hike, price gouge,
Price hike, price gouge,
Swiftly prices soar.
One price hike following another
Makes oil men rich and users poor.

(Muzzle tank!)

That's pretty cool, what you're doing. Rehearsing for a play is rather tough and then on top of it to perform in front of large crowds even more diffucult. This parody was the easiest thing you've thing you've done in a while. To boost your confidence, here's 555 standing ovations.

Loved: "who made this pump a ~ one-armed-Bandit ~ '"! Just paid $3.59/gal for regular here in NorCAL.

Good, focused serious satire

Although the price of gas is determined more by the law of supply and demand than by gouging, this is very well done. I particularly like the "Muzzle tank!" and am looking forward to more of your FOTR parodies.

Brilliantly done--it would go well with my parody of "Tradition" called "Emissions." http://www.amiright.com/parody/60s/zeromostelcast0.shtml

I think I'm just going to stick to riding the Shoelace Express. But I'll give you $5.55 for a half gallon of gas. [Hey, it could happen!]

Nice write, but more on the serious side. High prices are probably coming again (unfortunately).

Melanie - this is a gas. I noted that it was written when the gas prices were sky high. We're due for more and worse I fear. This parody is still releant. Nice bit or writing.

(ABC) Looking at the date of release, I can recall it being the issue of the day. Thankfully the price has dropped since then but not enough. You should read Johnny D's "Pay This For Gasoline, Man" Melanie, for more fury-venting - 555

(ABC5) Um, yay, a parody about the gas price risings...that's kind of old...and I didn't care about even when it was the hot topic. Um...now what?

ABC: Not bad, i'm just not a big fan of political type parodies, but still pretty good. Also my first time hearing the OS but good job!

Taking the bus everywhere is annoying as Hell, but the fact that I don't need to worry about gas is a really great feeling.

By the parody title, I thought it might be a spoof of Jesus Jones' "Right Here, Right Now". Timely when it was written, and still applicable now. A little light on humor, but the universal relateability more than makes up for it. 554 9/10ths! =)
