Song Parodies -> "DKTOS"

Original Song Title:

"Strangers In The Night"

Original Performer:

Frank Sinatra

Parody Song Title:

"DKTOS"

Parody Written by:

Tommy Turtle

The Lyrics

(To our new or occasional visitors: "DKTOS" is a common acronym here saying that as a reader, I "Don't Know The Original Song" that you're parodying -- which makes it much harder to assess the parody, and less attractive to the reader.)

Hope everyone knows *this* one, as TT's done it only, like, six times before, including facetiuosly mocking AIR on his tenth day here.

DKTOS
I've never heard it
Link to lyrics? Yes! --
-- Read word for word; it --
-- Still comes out a mess
But wait! There's music, too!

Listen: what a fright!
From diff'rent era
Old/young: like day/night
I lusted: Farrah
"Faucett" "drips", all right! [1]
Their "Lady Gaga": Ewww!

DKTOS
All kinds of people
That's why: DKTOS
So, comes the moment when you've something great to say:
Stick to "Yesterday"
For all generations: played [2]
Your parody creation: made

And...
Christmas carols, too,
Are "safe" OSes
DKs will be few
And far more "yes-es"
Well-known songs, address:
No "DKTOS"

[Interlude: younger crowd lauging hysterically at The Andrews Sisters: older crowd runs screaming from room at heavy metal, rap, techno, punk, hip-hop, etc., etc., etc.]

Do not throw your chance away
On rap or ballroom dance, OK?

An ...
OS known by all
Will get more voters
Those that most recall
Are best promoters
Carefully assess:
Avoid "DKOS"

(Jonas Brothers? Who?)
('N Sync: Wash dishes?)

(Perry Como? Pew!)
(He swims with fishes...)

[1] Farrah Fawcett R.I.P. June 25, 2009. ... On a lighter note, TT vaguely remembers during her stardom someone making a nude statue of her with standard faucets attached to each breast, entitled "Pair 'o Faucetts". A lawsuit ended that statue rather quickly, if feeble memory serves correctly.

[2] By some accounts, the Beatles' "Yesterday" is the all-time most-frequently-played song on the radio. having surpassed Bing Crosby's "White Christmas". It's also probably the most-frequently parodied song here, with 203 parodies at last count (including 12 by TT and one by FG/TT.)

(No, TT didn't count all 203. It's a high-tech secret. ;)

Great job, TT. I'd much rather listen to Perry Como, Frank Sinatra, the Andrews Sisters or something along those lines than the Jonas Brothers. (Thus, it goes without saying that I listen to a lot of AM radio and have many vinyl records.) But I do have to say that NSync has grown on me in the last few years, and I seem to be about the youngest person to know all of AFW's and OMR's OSes (I'll be 30 this May.). 5s.

You've nailed the problem! Download the lyrics, find a recording, try to get a feel for it. I wonder how many "critics" here actually put the time in and do the research in the name of quality. If I fail to offer a comment on somebody's work, it's because I (tympani roll) DKTOS! ;D

DKTOS (....just pulling your shell!!!). Great idea!

When I was in grade school there was a racist parody of the first verse of "Strangers in the Night" going around. Never did anything with it myself. The first time I saw DKTOS appended to one of my creations I didn't know what DKTOS meant. My preferences in music tend to run to the obscure. I try to check if anyone else has used a particular piece before I have a go at it, just to make sure I'm not just duplicating someone else's work. I noticed that I'm the first here to have used Bob Marley's "Kaya" and only the third to try "Free Electric Band" by Albert Hammond. Most songs after the 1980's don't register well enough with me to inspire anything. My real preference for music listening are instrumental themes. I won't listen to vocal versions of "Eye Level", "Scarlet O'Hara", or "Chariots of Fire" for fear I will lose the visualizations in my mind if I attach words to them. I haven't heard anyone mention "The Big Seven" lately. Is that still a feature here? Don't think anyone ever took up my challenge to do Bob Dylan's "Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts". I don't think I understand the original yet. Of course, there is always the ultimate musical nightmare: "Eve of Destruction", by Tiny Tim.

Jonas Brothers. Who? Seriously!

So my intent is absolutely, 100% crystal clear I'm gonna have to award this fine parody 'YesterFives'!
Great concept and lexecution to a vaguely familiar tune!

I KTOS this parody well! Better explanation of the fact that DKTOS!! If I did a parody on the same subject, I'd pick an OS DKTOS-worthy! But another enjoyable parody from you! Loved the way you subbed "do bee do bee do", with "Jonas Bros who?" and beyond! I really listen to all kinds of music. I also YT OS as well. At 12, I've also had taste for country music and classical music (since I used to take piano lessons). It's all good! 555.

Andria: Congrats on your comprehensive knowledge of the oldies! I'm impressed! :) Thanks for v/c!

Old Man Ribber: I would never censure pacing if I DKTOS and weren't willing to listen to several versions of it first. Agree that most of us tend to skip DK parodies unless the parody is on an interesting topic, or very funny on its own -- which the best ones are. Thanks for v/c.

Mark Scotti: STFU. (just pulling your paper towels! [Scotty's]) Thanks for v/c!

Patrick: Didn't Barry McGuire do "Eve Of Destruction" long before TT (Hey! that's Tiny Tim I meant, but ... must ... change ... initials...) ... TT (turtle, not tim) has done several "firsts" here, including "Sally Go 'Round The Roses" last week, very nicely followed up by 2Eagle yesterday, and several others. I like doing the under-rated, under-played oldies, but you *do* get better response, in general, if more people KTOS. ... also noted "Kaya" and that it didn't get a lot of hits. I DK it and don't care for reggae at all, hence no v/c -- sorry. ... Yes, Big 7 fever comes and goes. Thanks for v/c.

Andy Primus: No.
I DK Jonas also until several parodies here mentioned them or used their songs. I just picked it up from those, as an example of precisely that: which we 45 (rpm) (lol) + DK: them and many others. Thanks for v/c.

TJC: Yester-me, Yester-you, Yester-day (Stevie Wonder). ... Yester-T, yester-J, yester-C, crystal clear thanks to a vaguely familiar reader/commenter!

2Eagle: Please see lines 6 and 7. .... Jonathan S. asked TT for some comments on one of his works. I *did* go listen to the video. I'd rather be waterboarded by Dick Cheney. If they played that song repeatedly, I'd break down within 30 seconds and tell them everything I know and have ever known.
TT usually saves readers the trouble of looking it up by providing a YT link for all but the most well-known, but all of us are pressed for time (Whatever happened to all that leisure that technology was supposed to bring us?), and realizes that most don't do so -- as I confess, I don't, either. There's barely enough time to r/v/c the ones I *do* K. Thanks for v/c.

Phil Nelson: Since you've stated your age, I'll take you seriously on that. OS was quite controversial in the more-conservative times 40+ years ago, as it implied a one-night stand or promiscuity, jumping in the sack on a casual meeting, etc. Of course, all the uproar only made it more famous....
Here's the original 45-rpm: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGy9k31AHm0 Only 2:39 -- give it a shot. Thanks for v/c.

Christie Marie M: I enjoy classical as well, and some (not all country). Can flipper around on the piano at a dilettante level, but *love* listening to good piano. I have a MIDI of "Love Story" that rips! ... when I was a teen, there was a girl next door who used to take piano lessons, and I'd sit and listen for hours as she practiced classical pieces. (She grew up to become a cop and was killed during a robbery.) Thanks for v/c!

Fiddlegirl: It turned out so right ... that FG/TT write! :)

Personal opinion is that grammatically this one wasn't your best BUT it was very funny and to a song that I am pretty sure very few people can keep a straight face and say DKTOS. My mom sang a version of this in the car once "Strangers in the night, exchanging rubbers. . ." the rest is probably inappropriate for this site, but anywho. . .I loved it, particularly because DKTOS in a world with YouTube, AOL Music, Last.fm, and millions of other stream sites just isn't necessary anymore. And I love that title switch. . .5s

Warner Brothers: YKAA. (You can always ask), you know. I don't think anyone would bite your head off for asking a good-faith question.
noob TT was once awarded the coveted "TMGLTM" early on, and DK the meaning -- ventured a guess (hobby is figuring out vanity license plates) and lucked out. TUVM4VC.

Below Average Dave: Thanks! ... LOL @ Mom's version, but with anyone whose lab test results you haven't seen, it's a good idea :) .... See reply to 2Eagle re: dislike of much modern "music", and lack of time for *many* of us to look up every song.
I'd love to know where I made grammar errors, so I won't make those mistakes again. Looking forward to the details, and thanks again for the title switch props and the v/c in general!

"Eve of Destruction" was written by P.F. Sloan, aged 19 at the time (1965). I believe the first recording was by (dramatic pause) "The Turtles". Every folk singer of the 1960's recorded it (except Bob Dylan, to whom it is sometimes falsely attributed). Every punk band today continues to record it. Tiny Tim's version runs a staggering 25 minutes, 49 seconds or thereabouts. In more prosperous times I paid $50 for the rare "Rock" CD in order to add this monstrosity to my collection of some 40 "EOD". Have versions in French, German, Italian, Danish. Wrestler/Governor Jesse Ventura recorded it. When it comes to written parodies, I tend to only look at those of songs I recognize. On the old Dr Demento show I would often hear parodies that would send me in search of the original. That would be good for the first writers and singers.

I agree with Patrick - I like doing obscure 70s stuff, but we always have to provide a link. Patrick, we did the first parody of Free Electric Band I think... :-)
Tommy Turtle - March 10, 2010 - Report this comment
Meriadoc, that makes three (four?) of us (is Pippin not able to read many songs these days? Just hoping he (?) is OK, not looking specifically myself.).
I like doing the one-hit wonders, etc. but one *does* get lots of DKs. And it seems not too many follow the link. Thanks for v/c.

Meant: Wasn't looking for more votes from Pippin on my songs, just conspicuous by his absence and hoping all is well.
Meriadoc - October 10, 2012 - Report this comment
I follow the links when I have time (which isn't often); otherwise if I DKTOS but still wish to honor the writer, I comment but do not vote. When we were active in the contests back in the day (and we are getting back into that) it was/is a requirement to listen to the OS, so that one can vote properly. Because of that I have found a lot of gems among the more 'modern' songs that I otherwise would not have been aware of. Of all genres. And have added them to my MP3 collection. :)
Peregrin - October 11, 2012 - Report this comment
I'm here now! Hmmm, I have complete sympathy for the parody! Also I have the same sympathy for that which Merry has written...What to do? What to do?

I guess my approach is that if I get a personal recommendation from someone, then I will trust in their judgement and try to see in it what it is that they see in it. Sometimes it's blah, sometimes it's Ja!
Tommy Turtle - October 12, 2012 - Report this comment
Meriadoc: Same here on the time issue. I'm self-employed, and hence don't have the luxury of using my employer's time (and computer) to read and vote. There used to be time stamps on comments as well as date stamps, and it seems the majority of comments were posted during US work hours. Strange, eh? ... probably one reason for discontinuance of that.
Agree on commenting on DKTOSs if you find the parody worthwhile on its own. The contest requirement mentioned is a major reason why TT has never entered contests. There would be a lot of DKTOS, and given the gap in age, tastes, etc., a lot of those I would not wish to hear. Also, the sheer time commitment of reading (and listening?) to all of the others was a barrier. Not competing here with anyone -- a nice comment is prize enough for moi. ;) ... and yes, I have some MP3s of fave tunes. (MP3 = Merry & Pippin, 3 Fives? xD )

Peregrin: Looks like we're all pretty much in agreement on the major topics. I'm afraid my batting average for trying someone's recommendation and liking it is not high. Perhaps a bit inflexible (it's that hard shell, lol), but taste is taste. And somewhere in the 1970s or so, it was no longer a requirement that "singers" actually had to be able to sing. :(

Thanks both for stopping by!
