The Lyrics

The original, of course, was Nancy With The Laughing Face, and it features the melodic and harmonic gifts of the great and still hugely underrated Jimmy van Heusen. Sinatra wanted a song about his little baby girl, and he wasn't a guy you said "No" to. Especially if you were his favorite composer and you wanted to continue to be his favorite composer. The original lyric---by Phil Silvers, believe it or not--- was sweet and sentimental, although not over the top. My parody lyric isn't over the top, either, although the subject itself is over the top, wa-a-a-ay over the top. "Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi" makes about as much sense as "Nobel Peace Prize Winner Yasir Arafat." (He did??? You're kidding!))
At each joint session, she sits with Cheney
Much better looking, much less brainy
This country hasn't a prayer
With Nancy in the Speaker's Chair

Far out in left field, she's legislating
Proud of her perfect NAMBLA rating
Picture the world run by Cher
That's Nancy in the Speaker's Chair

Did you ever hear liberals droning?
Well, just wait 'til she starts in to yap
You'll agree to submit to a stoning
If she'd just shut her trap

Keep Condoleezza, keep Maggie Thatcher
She may not match their mental stature
But she's got way better hair
That's Nancy, in the Speaker's Chair

"This country hasn't got a prayer"? As long as Bush is in the White House, Led Zeppelin remains right: "Cryin' won't help ya now, prayin' won't do ya no good." Of course, the title of that song is "When the Levee Breaks." Very appropriate. But the parody was well-paced, and it wasn't completely offensive, so I couldn't give it a 1-1-1.

I don't understand the obsession with her looks. Pretty sexist. As is the comparison with Thatcher and Rice -- what does a PM from the 80s and the current SofS have to do with the current speaker? Oh yeah -- they're all girls in politics! Silly me.

Burnbra: it's not an obsession, but face it, she's pretty hot for 63 (or whatever she is). Plus she's a moron. And not only is she a moron, she's a moron who's just a couple of heartbeats away from the leadership of the free world. And as ludicrous and scary as that is, it's worth a laugh. Put it all together, throw in a tune that's tailor-made for the occasion, add some good rhymes, and presto-- you've got a parody. Which is why the Thatcher and Rice references work so beautifully: because it's a parody, and those lines reflect what was going on in the original lyric ("Keep Betty Grable, Lamour, and Turner--She makes my heart a charcoal burner"). Plus they scan exactly the original music. (Ten syllables, accents all falling in the same spots. That's important.) And the closer you scan the original---while saying something different, and making it funny---the better the parody. Hey, there are people here who who call Bush a liar and worse, and there are others who make fun of fat people riding on airplanes. If it's funny, and if it's good parody, no problem, even if I don't agree with them, even if I think that they are misinformed or uninformed. Because like Joseph Bologna as King Kaiser said in "My Favorite Year": "In my business, you never cut funny." If you can't keep your sense of humor even when you disagree, maybe a parody site isn't the best spot to hang out.

Definitely, far out in left field. Well done, Jeff.
