The Lyrics

My last few offerings have had a distinctly less-controversial flavor. After almost igniting a flame war here (successfully defused), I 'd like to reaffirm something I've already said in my previous songs. I wish I could write plain old funny shtick about everyday subjects. BTW, the only rhyming in the original song is in lines 4 and 6 of each verse. ;D
I'm tired of taking well deserv-ed jabs at all those lousy politicians
And sounding like my sister is Ann Coulter and my brother is Glen Beck!
And 'though my work shows my feelings and my deeply held beliefs,
And I toss my jibes with lots of skill and ease,
I would rather be like my friends here on amiright and cool it,
And submit those funny gentle parodies.

John Barry rarely takes a shot at people 'cause he really doesn't have to -
He makes us laugh with all his witty takes and parodies about the beavers.
While the Turtle and the Fid-girl tackle Shakespeare brilliantly
And I holler out "Just keep it going please!".
I would rather cease my digs at lib'rals and their wild agenda
And create those funny gentle parodies.

'Though the cell phones and the trombones and the boogers give me lots of stuff to write on,
And my alter ego Elmer Fudd "pwovides fust wate matewial" for fun,
'Though I've documented my last year, retirement, writer's block,
My trombone gigs, and my badly creaking knees,
I still lack the gift of light touch and to be innocuous,
And produce more funny gentle parodies.

I have so many heroes here - it would take twelve more verses just to name them,
And from Airfarcewon on down they seldom get as strident as I'm apt to do.
B.J.M. is at my right side, Michael P.'s out on my left,
Politics are in my blood like some disease.
So I can't stop my ribbing of the things that I find foolish -
Wish that I could write those gentle parodies!

Peace! ;D

You are right OMR, nothing ever has to be vicious, and it shouldn't be taken as so. When it's there, you HAVE to use it! "Funny" needs "Punning"!!!

You spoke some of which was on my mind too. That's a very reflective parody, and I like it....esp. the part about writer's block....:/

Why dwell on politics and religion when there are really so many funny things in life - such as celebs and pets.

Great job. I know I often seem like I am a relative of Tom Green, Steve-O and GG Allin with the content of some of my work, and I see no resemblance to Ann Coulter or Glen Beck in what you write, practice and preach. I've enjoyed all your work, and I'm looking forward to more. 5s, and look for a Unobomber-themed parody from me soon.

You have written a gentle parody about not writing gentle parodies...Excellent pacing and content

Well-crafted and wonderful choice of OS... But if it makes you feel any better, no less than the great James Thurber backs you 100%: "Comedy has to be done en clair. You can't blunt the edge of wit or the point of satire with obscurity."

Great stuff, OMR... but if you 'gentle' them too much, I'll no longer have an excuse to smash my air guitar after singing selections from your ever expanding oeuvre !

Well written. DKTOS though. Yeah, I generally avoid politics myself in my parodies, just try to write about generally funny stuff. 5's

FWIW, John Barry has lashed out at a number of pols and pol figures, including suggesting that Glen Beck be lobotomized and drugged for expressing his beliefs. And FG and TT have done politics (one coming on Friday, actually.) It's called "Freedom of Speech". :)

Satire has been a time-honored means of social and political commentary since the days of ancient Rome. No reason to avoid it; it can be done without flaming, by sticking to issues and avoiding name-calling and personal attacks. No need for you to stop.

Agreed that certain writers who do almost *nothing* else but politics pale quickly. Mix 'em up (with a sheep as well as Shakespeare, I say ;), and stay versatile . Excellent write here, though. 555+, and stay free to call 'em as you see 'em.

Besides, some of the buffoonery that comes out of D. C. and elsewhere is sooo much funnier than anything else around!

Deepest thanks to all of you. Be assured that my edge and point will still be as sharp. I'll give you "sheep as well as Shakespeare" (THE quote of the millenium!). I just need to work on my "softer side" more in my estimation. ;D

Thou dost class *me* with *that*, Sir? ....
Nonetheless, "I will praise any man that will praise me."
